Item Concordancia del etiquetado nutricional de productos procesados y ultraprocesados de sabor dulce de tres supermercados de la ciudad de Cuenca con el RTE INEN 022 (2R). Cuenca, 2021(Universidad de Cuenca, 2021-10-05) Morales Avilez, Diana Elizabeth; Abril Ulloa, Sandra VictoriaBackground: Nutritional labeling is an informative tool that allows the consumer to know the nutritional characteristics present on the label of a Processed or Ultra-processed Food Product (APUP). Objective: The concordance of the content of the nutritional labeling of processed and ultra-processed sweet-tasting products from three supermarkets in the city of Cuenca with the RTE INEN 022 (2R), Cuenca, 2021 was determined. Methods: quantitative descriptive cross-sectional study. A database of 1200 sweet-tasting APUP products was analyzed. The analyzes were carried out in the SPSS version 15 program, the concordance and probability of inconsistencies in the nutritional traffic light label was determined. Results: 9.8%, 11.0% and 6.2% inconsistencies were reported in the components of sugars, fats and salt (sodium) respectively. An almost perfect concordance was observed in the indicators of sugars, fats, but only in the concentrations low (0.878; 0.884) and high (0.871; 0.856) respectively and in the indicator of salt (sodium), in the concentration low (0.900) and medium (0.867). It was found that the medium concentration is more likely to present inconsistencies in relation to the low concentration. Conclusions: There are inconsistencies between the reported and expected sugar, fat and salt (sodium) indicators of the APUP. It is necessary to develop a more specific critical nutrient nutritional information system that allows the consumer to have more accurate information on the amount of free sugars, fats and salt (sodium) added to the product.Publication Corrigendum to “Eating healthy”: distrust of expert nutritional knowledge among elderly adults [Appetite 165 (1 October 2021) 105289] (Appetite (2021) 165, (S0195666321001963), (10.1016/j.appet.2021.105289))(2022) Suarez Ontaneda, Maka; Abril Ulloa, Sandra Victoria; Torres Carrasco, Maria Elissa; Encalada Torres, Lorena Esperanza; Kuritzky, Amy; Morales Avilez, Diana ElizabethThe authors regret to inform that the affiliation of the author María Elissa Torres is wrong, she made this research and writing as part of Universidad de Cuenca, in Cuenca, Ecuador not in UDLA, Quito, Ecuador as it is published. For this reason, there are protocols in place to monitor the food environment. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the consistency of nutrition labeling on packages for processed and ultra-processed products (UPPs) found at the main supermarkets in Cuenca, Ecuador. We conducted a descriptive cross-sectional study in which we identified label components on the packages of 1725 foods and beverages—including the nutrition table, statement on sweeteners, ingredient list, and the traffic light (TL) label—and determined the degree of consistency between the indicators reported on the traffic light label and those obtained from the information in the nutrition table. We found that 24% of products had inconsistencies in the traffic light label, and 10.9% of products had inconsistencies in the indicator for sugar specifically. The majority of inconsistencies were in the medium indicators for sugar (K = 0.68) and fat (0.75). The products with a medium indicator for sugar had a 1.98 (p < 0.05, 95% CI 1.15, 3.39) times higher chance of having inconsistencies in comparison with the low indicator. Health authorities must create new guidelines to allow for continued monitoring of the nutrition and traffic light labels on products accessible to consumers.Publication Preventing overweight and obesity among preschool children: lessons learned in Cuenca, Ecuador(2022) Abril Ulloa, Sandra Victoria; Romo, Matthew L; Morales Avilez, Diana ElizabethIntroduction: Childhood overweight and obesity are major public health problems globally, including in Ecuador, and there is increasing interest in intervening as early as possible. We previously developed and evaluated a behavioural and educational intervention aiming to improve diet and physical activity habits among children at municipal preschools in Cuenca, Ecuador, after which it was implemented. Objective: To describe some of the key lessons learned in the process of intervention development, evaluation, and implementation. Methods: We conducted program evaluation using a survey questionnaire with open-ended questions with the coordinators, teachers, and kitchen staff of the preschools that participated in the intervention. Results: Human resource changes were a threat to the continued success of the intervention; therefore, these changes need to be anticipated and peer training emphasized. Careful consideration also needs to be given to impact on preschool staff workload. Teachers and other stakeholders like administrators should take ownership of the intervention and play a leadership role, distinct from that of researchers. Regarding the intervention itself, we identified that both fidelity and adaptability were critical for continued success. Conclusion: Lessons learned from our setting may be useful to inform the design, evaluation, and implementation of sustainable preschool-based interventions aiming to improve diet and physical activity habits elsewhere.Publication Programas de intervención nutricional y de actividad física en preescolares en Latinoamérica: Revisión bibliográfica(2017) Abril Ulloa, Sandra Victoria; Morales Avilez, Diana Elizabeth; Orellana Paucar, Adriana Monserrath; Yamunaque Leon, Janneth Soraya; Palacios Santana, Gicela Monserrate; Chilet Rosell, Elisa; Huiracocha Tutivén, María de Lourdes; Monsalve, Daniela; Sempértegui León, Silvia RocíoThe material presented in this paper consists of a literature review about educative interventions promoting healthy habits in preschoolers in Latin-America. Due to changes in food patterns as a consequence of various factors such as migration, globalization, technology development, urbanization and socioeconomic status, underwent the traditional diets of this region drastic nutritional changes with an increased number of processed foods high in sugar and saturated fat. This transition coupled with a low prevalence of physical activity led to an increase in the prevalence of overweight and obesity among the different age groups including preschoolers. In fact, obesity has become a pandemic phenomenon not only in Latin American but worldwide. As a consequence, the increase in the prevalence of Chronic Non-C ommunicable Diseases (NCDs) is a health problem that requires special and urgent attention within the Health System. Therefore, educational interventions for healthy eating and physical activity are important and necessary for different age groups, especially for preschoolers since that knowledge and habits acquired at this age will probably remain during adulthood.Item Programas de intervención nutricional y de actividad física en preescolares en Latinoamérica: revisión bibliográfica(Universidad de Cuenca, 2017) Abril Ulloa, Ana Victoria; Morales Avilez, Diana Elizabeth; Orellana Paucar, Adriana Monserrath; Yamunaqué, Soraya; Palacios Santana, Gicela; Chilet, Elisa; Huiracocha Tutivén, María de Lourdes; Monsalve, Daniela; Sempértegui León, Silvia RocíoThe material presented in this paper consists of a literature review about educative interventions promoting healthy habits in preschoolers in Latin-America.
