    Intoxicaciones en el área de emergencia de pediatría, y agentes causales, en menores de 16 años. Hospital Vicente Corral Moscoso. 2011- 2015

    BACKGROUND: Poisonings in Ecuador have been increasing according to the latest reports from the CIATOX, due to improper storage and use of toxic; being pesticides, drugs and household products the main causes. GENERAL OBJECTIVE: To determine the characteristics of Poisonings in Emergency Pediatrics and its main causative agents in patients under 16 years at the “Vicente Corral Moscoso” Hospital from Cuenca since January 1, 2011 to December 31, 2015. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A descriptive study was performed, taking as universe all the medical records of patients seen in the emergency area under 16 years with diagnosis of poisoning. The information was collected by using a form and processed using descriptive statistics in the SPSS program. The results were presented in graphs and tables. RESULTS: There were 563 poisonings, which represents 0.84% of all pediatric care service, 69 different toxic were identified, Cholinesterase Inhibitors (19.4%), the age presented a bimodal pattern with two peaks, 0 to 3 years (42,5%) and 12 to 15 years (37,5%); the predominant sex was female 298 cases, the predominant anatomic route of poisoning was the digestive with (90,6%); 79% were produced at home, the intoxications were mostly accidental with (60,6%), 217 required hospitalization. CONCLUSIONS: At the HVCM the number of attentions is maintained in very high levels being these mainly household-type accidents, the vast majority avoidable, and representing a great underrated health problem
