    Desnutrición crónica y anemia asociación con rendimiento escolar en niños y niñas de 6 a 12 años de la Escuela República de Chile. Cuenca-2012

    Introduction: the theoretical basis indicates that adequate nutritional status is important for intellectual development, especially at school age and early adolescence (6-12 years). Since both stages exhibit remarkable physical and psychological changes, determining the impact of Chronic Malnutrition and anemia in academic achievement is a priority in our population. Objective: To determine the prevalence of chronic malnutrition, anemia and its association with school performance with the students of Republic of Chile School in the city of Cuenca in 2013 Methodology: this was a cross-sectional study of prevalence, demographic data were collected on all students whose parents agreed informed consent for research in addition to anthropometric measurements such as weight and size. We calculated the nutritional status based on body mass index as recommended by the World Health Organization indicators plus size / age and weight / age according to the age of the children. Academic performance was assessed by the average of the first five months and determined the degree of anemia by measuring hemoglobin and hematocrit, nutritional status was associated with academic performance. Expected results: The population presented a mean age of 8.83 years and a standard deviation of 1.85 years, being male schoolchildren the most numerous with 58.5 %. The prevalence of stunting started off 38 % and anemia in these patients of 69.23 %, the average school performance was of 8.42 points with a standard deviation of 1.07 points out of 10 points scores. Chronic malnutrition was higher in older children and in males, malnourished children have a 5.32 times increased risk of having poor performance (score less than 16 points), whereas children with anemia at increased risk of 2.75 times. Conclusions: Malnutrition and anemia are associated with poor academic performance in children of the previous mentioned School. Keywords: chronic malnutrition, academic performance, anemia.

    Mejoramiento de prácticas alimentarias a través de la implementación de huertos familiares en la comunidad de Zhucay de la parroquia Tarqui en el cantón Cuenca provincia del Azuay 2013 - 2014

    Objectives: To improve the feeding way through the implementation of familiar orchards in Cuenca – Azuay. Year 2013 – 2014 Methods and Material: This study is an action participative investigation, made in Zhucay community whit pattern of 30 families, to recollect information was applied a survey food, analyzed in a database (Microsoft Excel) obtaining food practices of each family. Some familiar orchards were implemented to obtain good quality vegetables to incorporate into the diets to improve the feeding ways. Four workshops were given with topic: Healthy food, Manipulation and Cleaning of Food, Veggies in the Alimentation and Nutritious Preparations. The nutritional status was diagnosticated with anthropometric measures pre and post intervention. To ejecute the investigation was necessary the permission of the boss house. Results: It was fulfill that 100% of families have a space for their orchards. According the survey the 4 vegetables cultivated, obtaining: Broccoli: from 6, 67% to 16, 67%, Chard: from 0% to 16, 67%, Radish: from 0% to 3, 33% and Beet: from 0% to 3, 33% Whit the Nutritional education some changes were observated in the food frequency consuming 4-5 meal times. Conclusion: With the implementation of familiar orchard and educatives workshops, the food practices were improve in the 30 families guiding in a healthy, balance, complete, and economic food and free of chemical bad for the health.
