(Universidad de Cuenca, 2023-10-03) Mayancela Contreras, Paula Alejandra; Morocho Malla, Manuel Ismael
Background: empty nest syndrome is a set of symptoms such as melancholy, sadness, and discomfort that occur mainly in older adults when their children leave home. Objective: to describe the experiences of empty nest syndrome in older adults treated at Health Facility El Pan, Azuay in 2022. Methodology: this is phenomenological qualitative research. Categories of analysis: life cycle, older adults, abandonment, and empty nest syndrome. The study population was older adults receiving care at E.S. El Pan. Population: the snowball method was used. Inclusion criteria: be an older adult, and sign an informed consent. Evaluation: interview. Validation of information: updated bibliography. Data processing: Atlas.ti software program. Results: the stories describe the experiences of older adults, and show that the empty nest syndrome is present in elderly, although it is unknown by them. With the qualitative analysis it was possible to recognize the characteristics of the syndrome, being loneliness and abandonment the factors with the greatest presence. The condition affects everyone equally regardless of social aspects. Conclusion: empty nest syndrome is a problem of El Pan families. Although the signs indicate the presence of this phenomenon and its high frequency, it should be taken into account as a public health problem, and society as well institutions should be encouraged to be responsible for our older adults.
