The Company in charge of providing the public lighting service to the city of Cuenca is the Regional Company CENTROSUR, which has seen the need to determine the energy efficiency of the public lighting system in the urban area of the city of Cuenca, hence the purpose of the present investigation consisted in the identification of the ways that have a rational and efficient use of the energy and the approach of alternatives that allow a better use of the same one. To do this, it was necessary to gather information related to the basic concepts that encompasses the public lighting system and energy efficiency criteria, being taken at the end as guiding rules to Regulation 005/14 issued by the National Electricity Council (CONELEC), (ARCONEL) and the Technical Regulation on Lighting and Public Lighting (RETILAP), which proposes the Power Density for Road Lighting (DPEA) as an indicator of energy efficiency. In the second instance, we proceeded to calculate the parameters necessary for the determination of the DPEA of the city's roads and through a classification of these, based on the speed vehicular circulation and the characteristics of each one of them, identify which they fulfill with the criterion of the DPEA, and propose alternatives for roads that do not comply with the values established by RETILAP. Finally, the results, conclusions and recommendations of the topic are presented
