Alteraciones verticales del tercio inferior de la cara y su relación con trastornos temporomandibulares en estudiantes entre 13 y 16 años de la ciudad de Cuenca
(2013) Suconota Abril, Lourdes Cecilia; Llanes Serantes, Maribel
We performed a cross-sectional study to determine the alterations of the lower third of the face and its relation to temporomandibular disorders . 239 subjects were examined between 13, 14, 15 and 16 years old , four schools in the city of Cuenca randomly selected non-probabilistic . Clinical examination was conducted of students chosen and applied direct measurements. With clinical and functional examination determined the presence of crowding , rotations , tooth interference , premature contacts , with direct measurements were analyzed alterations of the lower third of the face by applying Legan index . The results were processed using the data package Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS Version 15.0 ) to relate the variables set , finding that subjects with vertical changes of the lower third of the face also presented temporomandibular disorders ( α = 0.04) , there is about sex more often in females but not statistically significant compared to males. Comparisons were made with studies conducted in other regions of South America, Europe and Asia. Since in our country there are no studies of this type . The results of some of these other studies are consistent and differed from those found in the sample of students of the south of Ecuador. At the conclusion of this research it can be stated by the results of this study that malocclusions and occlusal trauma are not significantly associated with TMD, however, changes the lower third of the face of decline have a statistically significant relationship with TMD regardless of sex

Altura de la rama mandibular y su relación con el ángulo SN GO-GN en radiografías cefálicas laterales digitales
(Universidad de Cuenca, 2023-04-17) Gómez Bautista, Verónica Paola; Llanes Serantes, Maribel
The present research study aims to establish the height of the mandibular ramus and its relationship with the SN Go-Gn angle in digital lateral cephalic radiographs in patients from 18 to 45 years old from the city of Cuenca-Ecuador. Materials and Methods: This study, quantitative, observational with a correlational approach, was carried out on digitalized lateral cephalic radiographs that rest in the archive of a radiological center in the city of Cuenca - Ecuador and included a total of 388 lateral radiographs chosen under certain criteria of inclusion and exclusion. The variables analyzed were mandibular ramus height, SN Go-Gn angle, and sex. The measurements were made, applying the AUTOCAD 2018 software, by an examiner previously trained for this purpose, and subsequently validated by the author of the study. The data obtained from the different measurements were recorded in an Excel spreadsheet. To evaluate the relationship between the height of the mandibular ramus and the SN Go-Gn angle, the Pearson r correlation coefficient was used, for the interpretation the suggestion of Cohen (1988) was followed; null correlation (0.00 ≤ r <0.10), slight correlation (0.10 ≤ r <0.30), moderate correlation (0.30 ≤ r <0.50) and strong correlation (0.50 ≤ r < 1). For the comparison, the parametric t-Student statistic was used, the significance considered was 0.01 (p<0.01). The data processing was carried out in the statistical program SPSS V27. Results: A strong negative correlation was found between the height of the mandibular ramus and the SN Go-Gn angle (r= -0.535; p<0.001), which implies that the higher the height (mm), the lower the angle (°). Conclusion: The results showed that there is a relationship between the height of the mandibular ramus and the SN Go-Gn angle, in patients from 18 to 45 years old. Key words: mandibular Ramus, mandibular growth

(2018) Salinas Villacís, Pamela Jeanneth; Llanes Serantes, Maribel
Functional devices such as Herbst and Advansync have been considered as effective mandibular propulsors and improve skeletal discrepancies in Class II subjects. The aim of this study was to compare the sagittal, transverse, vertical and positional changes of the condyle in Class II patients treated with Advansync and Herbst appliances by means of CBTC. Method: The study was performed with 58 tomographies (pre and post treatment) of 29 adolescent patients, who were treated with mandibular propulsors for 10 months, of whom 6 women and 23 men, high school students between 11 and 17 years old. an average age of 14.11 years (SD = 1.9), 14 patients were treated with Herbst and 15 with Advansync. Results: In the group of people treated with Herbst equipment, the vertical changes (height) were significant (p <0.05) with growths of 2.12 mm on the right side and 1.14 mm on the left side, likewise in the group with the Advansync appliance resulted with significant growths of 0.83 mm on the right side and 1.25 mm on the left side. While the sagittal, transverse and positional changes for the two groups change, however, they are not statistically significant. (p <0.05). Conclusions: The vertical changes were the most significant that there was a similar increase in height for the two Herbst and Advansync groups. The sagittal, transverse changes and the produced in the upper, anterior and posterior articular spaces were not statistically significant

Cambios corticales en los dientes anteriores superiores e inferiores con Brackets convencionales, Damon y biofuncional QR en pacientes de trece a veinte y cuatro años
(2016) Pacheco Orellana, Clara Alejandra; Llanes Serantes, Maribel
There are several treatment systems for orthodontics which should be analyzed to avoid alterations in the periodontium, especially in cortical alveolar processes. Therefore, the aim of this study is to learn about the alveolar bone changes; resorptions, appositions or no bone change at all. To carry out this study, three Treatment Systems were used as samples: The Self-ligating Damon System, Biofunctional QR System and Conventional Systems with Roth and MBT prescription, the brackets were used with 18 patients (six for each system), who underwent tomography before the treatment as well as after completing the stage of alignment and leveling. Drawings were used in the tomographic studies in order to measure, with millimeters, the vestibular cortical alveolar, palatal maxillary, vestibular cortical and lingual mandibular of the six upper and lower anterior teeth, bringing the sample to 216 teeth. To obtain the results of the study, the data was entered into an Excel spreadsheet and processed statistically by using SPSS version 22 software, with ANOVA and Tukey tests, the results for the average bone resorption was p= 0,05 and with the Biofunctional QR System p= 0,025, the latter showed apposition in the mandibular lingual cortical. In conclusion all treatment systems cause bone resorption, the most resorption is caused by the Damon System, followed by the Conventional System and then the Biofunctional QR System, the latter produces a statistically significant apposition. In the upper anterior teeth, there were no significant osseous changes and in the lower anterior teeth the greatest resorption was in tooth 42 and 32 and apposition in tooth 41

Cambios dimensionales del arco inferior en pacientes tratados con sistemas Damon y MBT
(2015) Bravo López, María Verónica; Llanes Serantes, Maribel
Currently there are disputes over dimensional changes in patients treated with both conventional orthodontic techniques and passive self-ligating. This research aimed to evaluate these dimensional changes of the lower arch into two treatment systems: Damon and MBT to determine which of them produce or does not excessive transverse expansion, arch length and incisive protrusion, as unplanned changes at the end of treatment. They were selected pretreatment and post treatment models such as 20 for Damon system and 19 for the MBT system with an equal number of initial and end digital cephalic radiographs of patients discharged by residents of the postgraduate orthodontic clinic of the University of Cuenca. It was determined the programmed values related the transverse diameter, transverse expansion, incisive protrusion and increase the length of the arch with the technique of Wala Ridge at the level inter-canine, inter-first premolar, inter-seconds premolar and inter-molars and compared with real results. The data were statistically processed by SPSS software version 22 with Shapiro Wilk test, Student's t test and U test of Mann-Whitney. It is concluded that Damon System produces a statistically significant increase of the inter-molar distance and incisive protrusion after treatment and performs a self-limiting expansion with a predictable end staying within or with no significant differences in the values programmed at baseline. On the other hand, MBT system it does not produce statistically significant differences pre and post treatment to inter-canine level, but it does at the inter-first premolar level

Cambios esqueleticos sagitales en pacientes de 11 a 18 años de edad con maloclusion clase II esqueletal tratados con aparatologia Advansync & Herbst. Prueba clínica aleatorizada.
(2018) Ojeda Cruz, Ximena Alexandra; Llanes Serantes, Maribel
Class II malocclusion is a frequent problem in orthodontic patients, whose main cause is mandibular retrusión, therefore, the purpose of this randomized prospective clinical study was to determine and compare the sagittal skeletal changes produced in patients treated with Advansync and Herbst. The sample consisted of 30 patients, who met the criterion, 6 women and 24 men, between 11 and 17 years old with an average of 14.4 years(SD = 1.96), the sample was randomized and was obtained two study groups; the total treatment time was 10 months, with activations every three months. The cephalometric tracings were made by a specialized researcher using the software Dolphin Digital Imaging and Management Solutions version 11.3 ™, at the beginning (T1) and at the end of the treatment (T2). For the statistical analysis the tests of Shapiro Willk,. T- Student, and Fisher's exact test were used, with a statistical significant of (p <0.05). The results indicate that Herbst had significant changes in all the measurements, and with Advansync there was only significant change in the Wits. There were no statistically significant differences in the evaluated measures when comparing both devices. There were favorable changes with both Herbst and Advansync, however, Herbst showed a higher percentage rate of desired effects in the analyzed angles, specifically in SNA, SNB, ANB, Wits and NAPog.

Comparación de la durabilidad, deformación elástica y plástica de tres tipos de módulos elastoméricos en el postgrado de Ortodoncia de la Universidad de Cuenca periodo 2012 – 2013
(2013) Cedillo Chica, Flor Paulina; Llanes Serantes, Maribel
An experimental study was performed in vitro to determine the most effective module elastomeric in the orthodontic treatment. We chose three brands of elastomeric modules 40 modules each brand that were Morelli , Tp Orthodontic, and Ormco, which is used in dry 20 and 20 in wet , to which they were analyzed for a period of 28 days to see moment occurred when elastic and plastic deformation . Results were processed in the program Statical Data Package for Social Science (SPSS), to relate the dependent and independent variables and found that there is no statistically significant difference between brands and they can all be used for the initial alignment and leveling. Is concluded that the wet environment increases the degree of deformation of the elastomeric modules related dry environment. Modules (super slick) Orthodontic Tp are best responded to the tests they were subjected. Ormco brand modules due to external and internal diameter from baseline measurements are smaller than the other two brands are more likely to suffer when placing break leagues in brackets as in this study

(2018) Prado Segovia, Janeth Mariela; Llanes Serantes, Maribel
Class II malocclusions are the vast majority of the skeletal discrepancies treated in orthodontics. The aim of this study was to establish the effectiveness of skeletal and dentoalveolar changes with the use of Herbst and Advansync appliances according to the stage of vertebral maturation in skeletal Class II patients. The sample consisted of 30 subjects ranged 11 to 18 years of age randomly divided, 15 used the Herbst appliances and 15 Advansync, according to the stage of cervical vertebral maturation Baccetti method was divided into two groups: pubertal group (subjects with stage CVMS I, II, III) and postpubertal group (stage CVMS IV, V) and to determine the effectiveness of the devices in terms of skeletal and dentoalveolar changes the variables OLp-SS, OLp-Pg, OLp-MS, OLp-MI, OLp-IS, OLp-II according to the Pancherz analysis were used. They obtained very highly significant changes P ≤ 0.001 for the variables OLp-MI 6.95 mm in the pubertal group and 7.4 mm for the postpubertal group. OLp-II 9.9mm puberal and 7.4mm postpubertal. OLp-Pg 5.03mm puberal and 3.16mm postpubertal. No significant changes were found for OLp-SS, OLp-MS, OLp IS. The results of this research reveald that there are no statistically significant differences between the pubertal and postpubertal groups in terms of skeletal and dentoalveolar changes with the use of Herbst and Advansync appliances, therefore, this type of treatment is a good alternative for skeletal Class II correction in patients that are in the peak of pubertal growth as in the postpubertal stage

Mal oclusiones y su relación con la postura cráneo vertebral en estudiantes de la Carrera de Odontología de la Universidad de Cuenca
(2016) Gualán Cartuche, Leonardo Patricio; Llanes Serantes, Maribel
The craniovertebral position can influence the etiology of dentomaxilofaciales alterations. The aim of this study was to determine the frequency of malocclusions and their possible relationship with the craniovertebral position in students of the Faculty of Dentistry at the University of Cuenca; 60 students were selected from first to fifth year by clinical examination in the clinic of postgraduate Orthodontics; Each subject was required to submit all first molars in the mouth, did not receive orthodontic treatment, craniocervical trauma suffered no consideration or ears and eyes disorders that affected the balance. To each side of the skull teleradiografías standardized natural position of head, were studied with cephalometric analysis used in the specialization of Orthodontics at the University of Cuenca, by cephalometric program Nemoceph (Software Nemotec Dental 10.4.2), and dividing the sample into three groups (Class I = 25; Class II and Class III = 21 = 14). The measures included cephalometric tracings Steiner, Bjork, Burstone and Legan, Ricketts, Tweed, ODI, APDI, Wits, and craniocervical analysis Rocabado. By testing percentage and Pearson correlation test (R2) to the value of 95% confidence and p = 0.05 for the validation of our hypothesis, we found that the Class I malocclusions are more frequent, also tiny and little statistical relationships between some parameters of craniocervical analysis Rocabado with skeleton class, molar ratio and facial biotype were found.
