The purpose of this study was to identify the relationship between parenting styles and disorders related to alcohol consumption in students aged 18 to 21 from the Social Work program at the University of Cuenca during the February–July 2025 period. The study employed a quantitative, descriptive, and cross-sectional methodology, with a sample of 84 students enrolled in the Social Work program within the Faculty of Jurisprudence and Political and Social Sciences at the University of Cuenca. The instruments used were the Steinberg Parenting Styles Scale, adapted by Merino and Arndt, and the AUDIT (Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test). The sample was predominantly female (83.33%), with an average age of 19.49 years, and the majority were in the early semesters (44.05% in the second semester, 36.90% in the fourth). A total of 57.14% reported an authoritative parenting style. Additionally, 60.71% exhibited low-risk alcohol consumption, while 19.05% showed hazardous drinking behavior. The correlation between parenting style and alcohol consumption was weak (r = 0.14; p = 0.203). It is concluded that understanding the influence of parenting styles although not determinative—on alcohol consumption patterns can help in the preventive approach to psychosocial factors among university students.
