After the analysis of the emergency equipment localization, the process of the selection of two favorable points in the city for the localization and design of the stations is developed. Different arquitectonic postures and various norms used in areas with similar features as the ones in the selected locations in Cuenca for the fire departments are assessed. From its study, some strategies are obtained in order to offer a better mobility, functionality, and development of the activities in the fire stations. For the elaboration of the design of the different stations to be built in the selected points and in future places in the city, the deployment of a universal system that allows various forms of organizing and giving the possibility of a quick assembly and disassembly of the stations is posed. This system is presented in order to generate progressivity and versatility in the system, and also to obtain several solutions without the necessity of disturbing the construction system. One of the fundamental strategies of this project is to give the possibility of equipping the city with minor stations in greater quantity, and to facilitate the increasement of the stations according to its respective necessities; which have the possibility of being incremented.Item Anteproyecto arquitectónico del nuevo mercado para la parroquia Baños(Universidad de Cuenca, 2024-06-20) Aguilar Guiracocha, Jessica Patricia; Guzmán Cartagena, John Patricio; León González, Pablo ArmandoThe main purpose of this thesis research is to develop the design of the new market for the Baños parish. This initiative originates from the request of the GAD president, with the aim of providing high-quality equipment that promotes the economic and social progress of the parish. The project’s development is structured into several chapters. Firstly, a comprehensive analysis of the regulations governing market design was carried out, with the intention of establishing the legal and technical foundations upon which the architectural design will be based. Next, a study of relevant case studies was conducted to extract architectural and urban criteria applicable to our project. In the third section, a detailed analysis of the existing conditions and challenges that must be addressed and solved through architectural design is performed. Finally, the project itself was developed, integrating all previous research and analysis into the architectural design to meet the established objectives. This process involves the definition of spaces, appropriate distribution of sales areas, inclusion of common areas and services, as well as consideration of aesthetic and environmental aspects that contribute to the integration of the market into the urban environment.Item Anteproyecto de diseño urbano arquitectónico y puesta en valor del antiguo hospital Moreno Vázquez, acueducto y puente Guaymincay en el sector Chacapamba, Gualaceo(Universidad de Cuenca, 2022-01-19) Abad Alvear, Mateo Nicolás; León González, Pablo ArmandoHeritage entities and green areas have been left in the background due to the uncontrolled increase in population growth in Gualaceo. In the development of the architectonic objective it is proposed its solution through concerning concepts to those urban components with the proposal of getting ideas and apply to the objective. The current study proposes to break the tension between public and private aspects. Besides it is considered the overlap of the urban systems through agreements in the city such as matter analysisItem Anteproyecto para la ampliación del área oncológica y de radioterapia del Instituto Ecuatoriano de Seguridad Social IESS(Universidad de Cuenca. Facultad de Arquitectura, 2025-11-13) Guillén Peñalosa, Johanna del Cisne; Vivar Mora, María Elisa; León González, Pablo ArmandoThis thesis presents the architectural preliminary design for the expansion of the Radiotherapy and Oncology Center of the Ecuadorian Institute of Social Security (IESS), located at the José Carrasco Arteaga Hospital in Cuenca. The project was developed in response to an institutional request from the IESS to the University of Cuenca, aiming to address the critical healthcare service deficit in oncology identified in zones 6 and 7 of Ecuador. Through comprehensive urban, physical, morphological, and functional analyses, the intervention proposes a vertical expansion of the existing building by adding two floors to a reinforced concrete structure with sufficient load-bearing capacity. The design emphasizes environmental comfort, universal accessibility, and operational efficiency by integrating passive lighting and ventilation strategies, as well as a functional redistribution that optimizes internal circulation and improves healthcare delivery. This expansion increases the center’s service capacity by 60%, enabling it to serve more patients and reinforcing Ecuador’s specialized hospital infrastructure for cancer treatment.Item Anteproyecto urbano arquitectónico: “Diseño de un equipamiento multifuncional y espacio público para la cabecera parroquial de Victoria del Portete”(Universidad de Cuenca, 2023-12-20) Pérez Jiménez, Emilio José; Salazar Pulgarín, Christian Andrés; León González, Pablo ArmandoIn 2015, the Millennium School was inaugurated in the north of the parish of Victoria del Portete, which is why the educational institution "Remigio Romero" remains unused, a space that has become an urban void due to the lack of use given to it over the years. Based on this premise, the present research is carried out to reactivate this space with new uses that are inte- grated into the existing social dynamics of the sector.Item Aplicación de soluciones basadas en la naturaleza en edificaciones ya existentes - caso de estudio multifamiliares del IESS Cuenca(Universidad de Cuenca, 2025-09-01) Palaguachi Andrade, Saskia Johanna; Paucay Jara, Karol Jazmín; León González, Pablo ArmandoThe degradation of green spaces and lack of ecological urban design in cities like Cuenca have a negative effect on environmental comfort and overall quality of life. In the IESS multifamily housing complex, extensive green areas are currently underutilized and lack sustainable planning criteria. This research explores the implementation of Nature-Based Solutions (NBS) to transform these spaces into resilient, healthy, and efficient environments. Passive strategies such as green walls, vegetated roofs, rain gardens, and permeable surfaces were proposed, emphasizing native plant species adapted to Cuenca’s Andean climate. An initial microclimate simulation using ENVI-met revealed surface temperatures exceeding 46 °C, low soil moisture, and outdoor thermal discomfort in exposed areas. Based on these findings, an ecological redesign was developed, strategically integrating vegetation to enhance ambient temperature, relative humidity, and urban green coverage. The selected species were chosen for their thermal insulation, acoustic absorption, evapotranspiration capacity, and low maintenance. A second simulation with the proposed NBS showed substantial improvements, including reduced surface temperatures, increased humidity levels, and better outdoor thermal comfort. This study confirms that NBS offer an effective approach to rehabilitate existing urban spaces while generating environmental, social, and urban benefits, and proposes a replicable model for similar contexts.Item Aprender Haciendo: modelo pedagógico experimental aplicado a una vivienda de interés social usando procesos constructivos innovadores ligeros en acero galvanizado(Universidad de Cuenca, 2021-10-01) Hermida Brabo, José Luis; Patiño Tenesaca, Darío Antonio; León González, Pablo ArmandoIn Ecuador, the lack of housing has come to violate the vital rights of low-income families. Only in Cuenca city there is a deficit of 14,608 homes, this due to the fact that 7,821 families are part of the extreme poverty group, and 6,787 families are part of the moderate poverty group, therefore, the difficulty of access to dignified housing. As a response to this harsh reality, the main objective of this research is to demonstrate the effectiveness of an academic process developed through experimentation and with the elaboration of a practical application proposal on a dynamic habitat model. The educational practice of the students is enriched through the execution of the experimental pedagogical model, thus innovating the teaching process and ensuring a good development of professional skills. In addition, it is intended to provide a real experience on the Steel Frame construction system in the construction of dignified housingfor the neediest populations. Thus, contributing to a great extent to the problem of low-cost housing deficit. For the development of this work, the research team used a qualitative-descriptive methodological approach, based on a case study and complemented with information collected through different instruments. In the project participated a family with limited economic resources, made up of 8 members of which 7 were children with ages ranging between 3 - 16 years and the mother who served as the head of the household. This project was applied in the rural area south of the city of Cuenca, in the El Lirio sector, belonging to Turi parish. The main conclusions of this work demonstrate that, from the social role, architecture and academia contribute significantly to the innovation of knowledge. Also, with the architecture teaching model, knowledge is better assimilated, an example of this is the knowledge shared between students. Likewise, regarding construction systems, the adaptability and responses of the Steel Frame system to unfavorable environments and conditions can be highlightedItem Arquitectura moderna en Ecuador 1940-1960, Karl Kohn(2019-07-01) Saraguro Gutierrez, Pablo Alejandro; León González, Pablo ArmandoThe research studies modern architecture in Ecuador in the period from 1940-1960, considering the architect Karl Kohn as one of the pioneers of the modern movement in the country since his arrival in 1939 as a result of the migration of the Czech Republic to Ecuador, research study the value of Karl Kohn’s work in the country, through five cases of emblematic studies of his work, which seek to immerse themselves and show that he was a pioneer of modern architecture in the country. Consequently, in order to achieve this goal, the study has as its starting point the study of the archives of the architect’s complete work, thanks to the rescue of drawings and drawings facilitated by the Kohn family archive. For what was done the chronological classification of the documents obtained from the catalog of existing works and plans with this seeks to understand the design process of each work to analyze and deduce how the architect faced each case from its location, the program and formal relations, relating to the rest of its architectural production. In parallel and principal, considering the notion of the (re) construction of the project as an instrument for the recognition of values and criteria, which, incidentally, should be named is the methodological tool for the analysis of each work. In short, this research will try to identify the relations and criteria of order of each work, and demonstrate that Kohn was one of the pioneers of modern architecture in the country. Cinco casos de estudio(2018-03-02) Sucuzhañay Guamán, Diana Yolanda; León González, Pablo ArmandoThe main objective of the following analysis is focused basically in the interest of knowing, save, diffuse, study and analyze exhaustively the use of the porch in the modern living places. Since it has become an architectural option with a diversity of formals, functional and technological values. This study made a priority focus on the porch as an organizer and articulating space, analyzing different processes graphics and theorist that allowed me to study it, understanding and appreciating from different points of view. For this purpose I have chosen five houses made by Marcel Breuer, whose attribute was the porches, within these are: the House for an athlete Berlin, 1931; Breuer II USA Massachusetts House, 1939; Robinson House, Massachusetts USA, 1946; Wise House, USA, Massachusetts, 1963; Stillman II House, Connecticut, 1965, exemplaries in which I can note that the porch is a differential and obvious elementary and not only linking spaces among themselves; but these become spatial projections, on arrivals and transition areas, shelters and in viewpoints or balconies getting a direct connection with the external environment. The methodology used for the analysis of the housing part of the identification of each architectural element on the site and the place, location and implementation, focusing into the special distribution and linkage of each one with the porches pretending to determine certain parameters of evaluation to let us understand the porch like an intermedium element between the inner and outer area housing and at the same time determine the influence or the climate.Item La colaboración interdisciplinar entre el arquitecto y el paisajista Ludwig Mies van der Rohe y Alfred Caldwell en el IIT de Chicago y Lafayette Park de Detroit(Universidad de Cuenca, 2020-01-31) Espinoza Semeria, Andrés Esteban; León González, Pablo ArmandoThe objective of the present investigation is to carefully study an aspect that has been frequently overlooked in the architectural design field, the built environment and surrounding landscape relation, and the interdisciplinary collaboration in the labor field. In this case, the study is about the architect and landscape architect (Ludwig Mies van der Rohe and Alfred Caldwell) interdisciplinary labor relationship, in two emblematic projects. First of all, a recognition of the landscape architect career will be made through the approach to his training and work, for later document the work of the landscape architect, in which the relationship with Frank Lloyd Wright at the beginnings of his career had a strong influence on his professional practice. This answers the question of why the also famous architect, Mies van der Rohe, after meeting him in one of his projects, asks him to join his work team and collaborate as the landscape architect, especially in two of his greatest projects, the IIT campus in the city of Chicago and Lafayette Park in the city of Detroit, which are the focus of this investigation. Therefore, how the projects of this study were conceived is analyzed: the design approach, design criteria, and the formal - functional relations, between the built environment and landscape, all of these based on a collaborative interdisciplinary relationship, from which it is pretended to define as the final objective, the contributions and time of participation of each professionalItem Densificación de la ciudad. Aproximación desde la arquitectura(Universidad de Cuenca, 2011-11-11) Cuenca Rosillo, María de los Angeles; Espinoza Carvajal, Kenny Joel; Moscoso Orellana, Oscar; Ordóñez García, Jorge Antonio; Ortega Ortega, Edgar Fernando; Peñafiel Ortega, Cristian Eduardo; Tenesaca Castro, Jaime Enrique; Peñafiel Encalada, Esteban Gastón; Pérez Soliz, Germán Santiago; Pérez Soliz, Iván Vladimir; León González, Pablo Armando; Zalamea León, Sergio Antonio; Moreno Núñez, AdriánThe present study hypothesized primary, middle or identify precise factors that determine the procedures necessary to densify the city, ie, increase the average density of the cities and increase housing densities, so that they can apply to our reality and everything is transformed into government policies for urban growth. A preliminary step consists of the chronological analysis of the historical evolution of cities, reviewing new urban concepts raised at the beginning of the twentieth century, allowing a clear view of the principles of re-ordering and densification of the "new towns" principles that are the basis for comparison and future development of criteria. Once these factors research focuses his study in Sao Paulo, Bogota, Medellin, Montevideo, Santiago, Quito, Guayaquil, Cuenca and Loja, to go much deeper into the description of examples paradigmatic collective housing both as settlement city which have been or are relevant in the context of each city. Through the application of a sheet collected relevant data in each set and metropolis, which allow charting summaries, for applying a "rubric" in which compares each settlement according to parameters set. This comparison allows obtaining results through which identify conditions setting a guide so that, applying the principles identified, can become the basis for an ideal model of densification of the city.Item Densificar el Centro Histórico de Cuenca. Propuesta habitacional experimental de interés social en centros de manzana(Universidad de Cuenca, 2023-11-15) Machuca Buestan, Andrés Marcelo; Quizhpi Barbecho, Diego Fernando; León González, Pablo ArmandoThe Historic Center of Cuenca faces several problems related to the low population density. In the present project, an alternative focused on the mentioned topic is proposed by means of the design of a housing complex adaptable for social housing that meets the necessary requirements to densify the selected city block center and that also favors the self-sustainability of the city. The result is a design that meets the demands raised, giving the option to replicate it to other city block centers and projecting a consecutive increase in population density by 16% compared to the census carried out by INEC in 2010.Item Desarrollo de un sistema estructural de costillas con elementos laminares de madera: vivienda social In. Lab Cuenca(2017) Fernández Parra, Luis Antonio; Lucero Poblete, Cristina Gabriela; León González, Pablo ArmandoThe study is focused on a ribbed structural system, its operating logic, and structuring ability. The system is understood as an integral construction element that satisfies at the same time the function of enclosure and structure. This stable and rugged system can be used to propose a low-cost housing prototype. For a complete understanding of the system to be designed, the study cases analysis focused on the structure (ribs system) and its function. The study takes into account assembly and anchoring constructive circumstances, minimum cross sections, possible employed materials, and at the same time the technical possibilities that this system provides. After wood’s technical conditions exploration in our enviroment, and based on the understanding of the “Norma Ecuatoriana de la Construcción – Estructuras de Madera (NEC–SE-MD)” criteria, and regulations issued by “Manual de Diseño para Maderas del GrupoAndino PADT REFORT”. The most suitable species of wood is determined for use it in the building structure. Once the operating logic is understood and the design guidelines were established, a reduced scale prototype is built. This design is submitted to technical and laboratory tests, concluding with the construction of the approved design, to scale: 1: 2. In this way, the result is the development of a final prototype of a structural system of ribs with wood laminates, which allows for innovation in the construction system used in the construction of buildings in the city, and in a specific way Cuenca´s building system. To allow controlled self-construction, the building system’s design is based on the use of accessible local materials, as well as providing a constructive manual and the technical specifications of the final prototype.Item Diseño del anteproyecto arquitectónico para el edificio administrativo de EMAPAS-G EP en el cantón Gualaceo(Universidad de Cuenca, 2024-02-19) Moncayo Vargas, Omar David; Rodas Lituma, Carlos Manuel; León González, Pablo ArmandoThe Empresa Municipal de Agua Potable, Alcantarillado y Saneamiento de Gualaceo, (EMAPAS-G EP) has had a rapid growth since its foundation in 2010, which has led to an increase in the demand for its services and, therefore, to the need of having more spacious and adequate administrative and customer service facilities, for this reason the company requested the development of a preliminary architectural design study. The methodology for the research will use the mixed typology, which includes quantitative and qualitative, this because it will analyze theoretical foundations, the site where the project will be located, case studies, among others that will guide us to obtain design criteria to conceive the architectural draft, and thus finally quantify data either comfort for proper habitability in the administrative building, or spatial architectural character. The expected results are to achieve a building that meets the needs required by the company, transmitting its mission and vision in the resolution of the project. This is achieved under criteria of sustainability, functionality, permeability, versatility, resulting in a product that serves as a project reference and aspire that in a second stage it is possible to develop the executive project.Item Diseño urbano-arquitectónico del nuevo edificio administrativo para Centro Sur C.A. en el cantón Santa Isabel con la aplicación de estrategias bioclimáticas para la optimización del desempeño energético(Universidad de Cuenca, 2023-10-12) Delgado Palacios, Lorena Isabel; Rivas Rojas, Andrés Camilo; León González, Pablo Armando; Sánchez Castillo, José HernánThe demand for electricity in Ecuador increased by 8.13% in 2021 compared to the previous year, which highlights the need to guarantee the expansion and equitable access to this basic service. However, the Santa Isabel canton lacks an adequate administrative building so that the Central South Regional Electric Company can provide care in this territory. The design of this type of building represents a challenge, since national and local regulations do not include requirements to create healthy and sustainable work environments. The objective of this research is to design at a preliminary project level an administrative building for CENTROSUR in the Santa Isabel canton, using sustainable criteria to promote the work well-being of users and optimize energy performance. The hypothesis raised is that the implementation of bioclimatic strategies can meet these objectives. The methodology used includes an adequate theoretical foundation to support the urbanarchitectural design, as well as the diagnosis of the site of action. A preliminary project has been developed that considers the institutional objectives of the company and applies the principles of bioclimatic architecture. In addition, the energy performance of the building has been evaluated through three-dimensional comfort simulations. The main results demonstrate that the project satisfactorily achieves thermal, lighting and ventilation comfort in different analyses, including the hottest and coldest periods, as well as critical days. It could be said that the simulation reveals the different variations in the physical parameters of the space, however, the building maintains generally acceptable parameters, offering indoor environmental quality.Item Elaboración de un contrapiso de tierra pulida como acabado para vivienda social en Cuenca(2017) Flores López, Christian Javier; Delgado Tapia, Karen Paulina; León González, Pablo ArmandoOn Ecuador, the population shows a level of overcrowding of 18.2 % in the urban area, and 29.2% in rural area (NEC, 2014). In this context, has generated a housing deficit that has been addressed through massive and highly subsidized construction, with solutions located in the city´s profile, wich has caused the loss of social capital and forced people from the countryside to leave their habitat, away from their families and their social contacts. Cuenca is not the exception, according to data of INEC, 2010, mention that 64.9% of the population of Turi live in poverty, and the 29.41% in extreme poverty. Thus, the alternative of an earthen floor takes strength as a possible solution, with the use of resources of the area, because the villagers invest the scarce money available as a priority in walls, roof, and the floor is the result of the ground on which it sits. Before an explanation of regulations and technical conditions ot earth, it was determined the dosification por creation of prototype and the application of the sealant. In this way you get as a result the development ot two prototypes polished and sealant with linseed oil, that allows the innovation in terms of constructive systems of floors. One of the application system for this prototype is self - construction, so it was developed a manual that allows the user to be guided in each of the steps for the elaboration of a good floor quality.
