Hacia un plan piloto de conservación preventiva, basado en la campaña de mantenimiento de San Roque
    (2014) Koenraad, Van Balen
The need to have a Plan of Preventive Conservation, it is essential with regard to the processes of conservation of the heritage. This article presents a methodology developed by the project "Ciudad Patrimonio Mundial", which contributes to the development of a pilot Plan for preventive conservation, developed bearing in mind the proposal made by the ICOMOS for study of damage and consists of the following aspects: "anamnesis, diagnosis, treatment and control". (ICOMOS: 2003). In this way were determined four-phase plan, which have been implemented according to the experiences of the campaigns of preventive conservation (maintenance, in this specific case) applied in Susudel (December - 2011 and January 2013) and from the campaign of maintenance applied to heritage buildings of San Roque. At the end they will be presented the results of the campaign, from which general strategies for the development of a pilot Plan for preventive conservation in San Roque will be developed, which is aimed at the conservation of the heritage buildings in this neighborhood of Cuenca, in order to apply this methodology in sectors strategically chosen of this World Heritage City.

La participación social en el mantenimiento del patrimonio: la experiencia de Susudel
(Universidad Autónoma Metropolitana, ICOMOS México, 2014) Cardoso Martinez, Fausto Adrian; Koenraad, Van Balen; Garvin Perez, Anja; Astudillo Cordero, Jaime Sebastián; Moscoso Cordero, Maria Soledad
In rural areas, the conservation of the built heritage faces several difficulties that involve technological, social and economic aspects. The possibility that heritage is an agent of social cohesion and economic development, and that in turn generates local maintenance initiatives, are key issues discussed in this article. This work shares the results of a systematically planned and executed work, which took three months of preparation and five days of execution, carried out by the students and professors of the University of Cuenca, taking advantage of all available technical resources, and promoting the resurgence of an ancient practice of collective work, known as minga. Maintenance actions were carried out, in around fifty peasant buildings, work that opted for a change in the perception of the community towards heritage. Although the community has not replicated a similar experience due to the difficulty of obtaining economic resources for its organization, the experience is positive because there are small-scale actions and a shared consideration that this has been a starting point for future actions.

Sistema de Registro de daños para determinar el estado constructivo en muros de adobe
(2013) Achig Balarezo, Maria Cecilia; Zuñiga Lopez, Ivan Marcelo; Koenraad, Van Balen; Abad Rodas, Maria De lourdes
Adobe walls are common construction elements in the heritage buildings in the historic center of the City of Cuenca. Most of these buildings were constructed in the Republican period, especially in the period 1860-1940. Threats from natural and human origin resulted over time in a degradation of the heritage buildings. An important guide for the conservation is having a clear and accurate picture of the degraded status and condition of the adobe walls. To this end a damage registration system characterizing the current constructive state of the adobe walls in the City of Cuenca was developed. Surveys of the condition of adobe walls resulted in the derivation of measurable indicators and their respective variables, describing in a qualitative and quantitative way the constructive condition of the walls. A matrix based system for the prioritization and weighing of the variables was developed. Applying multivariate analysis resulted in the derivation of a global status indicator of the adobe wall. This indicator not only reflects the urgency of intervention, but also the type of constructional intervention or monitoring action required for the conservation of the wall.
