Natural light is understood as one of the fundamental pillars in architectural work. Despite this, it has been set aside by different technological advances in recent years without being replaced. It is generally scarce in houses located in historic downtowns due to the condition of being semi-detached. By being an infinite element, its use in any architectural project will be the net responsibility of its creator. Based on this context, this study presents a bibliographic compilation of diverse sources that allow having a broader vision of this element and its use in architecture, as well as the regulations that set the adequate ranges to achieve lighting comfort in the different spaces in homes in the city of Cuenca, Ecuador. This research includes the analysis of four case studies located in different latitudes and with different conditions. However, one thing they have a common is semi-detached houses with a front section not exceeding seven meters in length. Each case is examined through the use of environmental modeling and simulation software to determine the most used strategies and to understand the characteristics of each one of them. The result of this research allows proposing both passive and design strategies to make the most of natural light in houses in the historic downtown of the city of Cuenca. Additionally, it allows applying them in two existing houses located in different areas, which did not comply with the light comfort ranges determined by local regulations
