    Eficacia de la Espiramicina y Oxitetraciclina para el tratamiento de la mastitis clínica bovina durante el secado

    Bovine mastitis is one of the main causes of productive and economic losses in dairy farming, especially during the dry farming, especially during the dry period, when cows are most susceptible to developing intramammary infections. The objective of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of long-acting spiramycin and oxytetracycline, administered parenterally, in the treatment of clinical bovine mastitis during drying off. The research was conducted in two production units, and 32 mammary quarters belonging to eight cows were evaluated. Clinical and microbiological evaluations were performed at three time points: day 0 (start of drying off), day 7, and day 30 postpartum. The main etiological agents isolated were Streptococcus spp. (56.25%), Staphylococcus spp. (40.62%) and Escherichia coli (21,87%). The antimicrobial susceptibility test showed higher sensitivity rates for spiramycin (34.37%) compared to oxytetracycline (18.75%), with no statistically significant differences (p=0.17). In terms of therapeutic efficacy, spiramycin achieved a cure rate of 81.25%, while oxytetracycline achieved 56.25%, with no statistically significant differences (p=0.25). The recurrence of mastitis evaluated 30 days postpartum was lower in animals treated with spiramycin (18.75%) compared to those treated with oxytetracycline (43.75%); however, this difference was not statistically significant (p=0.13). In conclusion, although no statistically significant differences were found between the treatments evaluated, spiramycin showed better results in terms of antimicrobial sensitivity, greater therapeutic efficacy, and lower recurrence, and can therefore be considered a favorable alternative for management of clinical bovine mastitis during the dry period.
