Exploración e interpretación de los aspectos socioculturales en la comunidad gamer de Cuenca-Ecuador
(Universidad de Cuenca, 2025-02-20) Criollo Montaleza, Brian Omar; Herrera Torres, Dora Priscila
This research explores the sociocultural characteristics of the gamer community in Cuenca- Ecuador in the period from May to October 2024. It was developed under a qualitative approach, the data collection methods used were participant observation and semi-structured interviews, with the objective of analyzing the social dynamics, cultural practices and identity elements that characterize the Gamer community. In addition, the sense of relevance, socialization processes and cultural expressions as a result of social interactions in physical and virtual spaces are analyzed. The population studied is made up of gamers over 18 years of age who characteristically dedicate at least 3 hours a week to video games, and identify themselves as part of the Cuenca gamer community. The results showed that this community has developed a social system that integrates local and global elements through the links generated in virtual and physical spaces. It was concluded that there is a solid sense of belonging based on skills and merits, while social interactions reveal a duality in behaviors depending on the environment. It is important to highlight that the community has its own cultural norms, a particular language (slang) and self-regulation mechanisms, which contributes to the formation of a unique cultural identity. Therefore, this research is significant due to the growing impact of video games today, which is why it is necessary to understand the sociocultural implications.
