    Movilidad segura a la escuela: estrategias para mejorar la caminabilidad y los accesos alrededor de las escuelas Luis Cordero y Abelardo Tamariz

    The automobile has become the primary mode of transportation in the city due to the convenience and safety it provides for mobility to schools. In a transportation system that primarily focuses on vehicles, the coexistence of children walking to school and cars becomes complicated and high-risk for pedestrians. This is because public space is reduced, lacks planning, and lacks appropriate infrastructure design. These factors have decreased walkability to schools, which has motivated the development, implementation, and validation of tactical urbanism strategies to improve access to the Luis Cordero and Abelardo Tamariz schools. Through the Action-Oriented Planning methodology, it is possible to measure what happens in the environment, considering the users themselves. Low-cost and quickly implementable designs can be tested, allowing for the evaluation of how people’s behavior changes in public space, ultimately proposing an improved and permanent design. The results of this work highlight the vulnerability of children walking to school, as well as the importance of adequate public space for pedestrians, which allows for greater active mobility among children, thus enhancing the current level of walkability.
