This research is based on the study of three relevant works by the architect Marcelo Rodríguez Palacios, this being the pioneer of modern architecture in the city of Loja; These works, product of this research, refer to two types of buildings, based on the shape of their constructive roof, on the one hand, two works with flat concrete roofs and one with a concrete shell-type vault roof. In addition, these works will be taken within a time frame between 1960 - 1970, time that is considered as the decade in which the new and innovative programs were implemented for the different architectural projects; Also, it was the decade where reinforced concrete was implemented as a new construction system and it is finally the decade where the architect designs the largest number of works of his own, since after this date, his main activities are to build works and do not design. This project begins with a historical review of modernity at an international level, and also analyzes the five attributes of modernity; After this, the research delves into modern architecture in Ecuador, and how it was developed in the city of Loja, in what context, time, and its main references. In addition, it continues with important data such as the life of the architect, academic studies, his works, received influences, and professional legacy. In the following chapters the three works of the architect are analyzed through digital (re) drawing, an analysis method that is used to identify the design criteria used by the architect in each of his works. Finally, the projects are analyzed based on the structure and plastic use of concrete as a generator of the form, providing criteria of the architect and that can currently be taken as project material.

Since its invention and commercialization at the beginning of the twentieth century, the vehicle has occupied exponentially much of the cities, demanding the creation of more tracks, reducing the spaces destined for the displacement of pedestrians and cyclists. In the case of Cuenca, there is a remarkable growth of the vehicle fleet because people see motorized transport as a convenient solution to travel, causing vehicle congestion and greater pollution. However, the academy and the political sphere have promoted a paradigm shift on mobility and sustainability in Cuenca, making non-motorized transport (cycling and walking) the main means to move from one place to another. This has been achieved through the promotion of programmes and projects based on academic studies, in addition to the provision of cycling infrastructure around the city. However, despite the strategic planning carried out, there are some deficits with regard to this infrastructure, especially in relation to its physical properties and connection between routes. In order to prioritize pedestrian and cyclist traffic, and contribute to overcoming the aforementioned deficits; the present work proposes strategies of integrated urban design to improve the current conditions of the City of Cuenca’s cycle lanes, taking Av as a case study. Loja, sector Universidad de Cuenca (stretch between Av. Remigio Crespo Toral and Av. 12 de Abril). To this end, it is based on international theoretical foundations, cities in which the bicycle is positioned as one of the main means of transport and with consolidated cycling infrastructure, as well as the Walkability City Tool methodology and tools for the collection of information such as counting, tracing and fothographing, adapting them to the context of the study area

El rol moderador de factores individuales y sociales en la percepción térmica exterior de los usuarios de las márgenes del río Tomebamba
(2017-11-22) Galindo Pazán, Erick Tomás; Hermida Palacios, María Augusta
The perception of outdoor thermal comfort (OTC) is an indicator of urban-microclimate quality, and its study bestows guides for an informed urban planning conceived for sustainable development. In this research the general objective was to determine the moderating role of human-dependent factors in the external thermal perception, and to explore differences in thermal comfort requirements among representative groups of users, employing methodologies currently used at international level in OTC research: The Socio-Ecological Model (SEM) for the theoretical framework, the thermal index of Physiologically Equivalent Temperature (PET) for outdoor comfort, descriptive statistical analysis and inferential methods - ordinal logistic regressions –for the significance of SEM in the thermal sensation votes (TSV) –, statistical analysis of comfort requirements –Neutral Temperature (Tn), Neutral Temperature Range (rTn) and Acceptable Temperature Range (rTa) –, generation of PET index through RayMan 1.2 software, besides other standardized procedures for data collection (microclimatic measurements and questionnaires) described all in this study. 2321 users were surveyed in two sites belonging to representative areas of the Tomebamba river banks in the city of Cuenca – Ecuador. The main results show a moderating role - statistically representative in thermal perception votes (TSV) - of four individual factors: level of physical activity, level of clothing, white skin and perceived insecurity, without any findings of significant social factors. In addition, differences in outdoor thermal comfort requirements between men and women were found for the index employed; the Physiologically Equivalent Temperature (PET). The study was carried out during three representative weeks of the annual climate-type of the city of Cuenca, in the hottest month (January), cooler (July) and intermediate (April).
