Épulis fissuratum. Una revisión de la literatura
(Universidad de Cuenca, 2020-06-17) Gómez Morales, Juan Pablo; Montalván Barzallo, Bryan Xavier; Alvarado Cordero, Jacinto José
Objective: The aim of this article is to review the state of the art of diagnosis, etiology, histology and treatment of epulis fissuratum. Context: Épulis fissuratum is defined as a very common reactive fibrous hyperplastic lesion in edentulous patients with partial and total removable prostheses. The available literature describes several therapeutic options, but often does not include topics related to clinical and histological diagnosis, as well as the etiology of this lesion. Procedure: An updated bibliographic search and compilation referring to the topic described above was carried out using digital database such as: MEDLINE, PUBMED & SCIELO. The selected articles were randomized controlled trails, comparative clinical studies, case reports and literature reviews. Results: The literature analyzed in this review suggests that liquid nitrogen excision and Laser therapy provide better results compared to conventional surgical treatment. In addition to having an adequate predictability of the results. Mention is also made of the importance of the clinical and histological diagnosis of the lesion for a correct differential diagnosis. However, many of these studies do not include a representative sample that allows to draw reliable conclusions and this is evidenced by the absence of systematic reviews related to the subject. Conclusions: Cryosurgery and laser provide results as good hemostasis, scarring, satisfactory aesthetic and functional results. The removal of the lesion using scalpel showed results with more bleeding and postoperative pain, in addition suture is required.
