(2016) Pérez Ulloa, Danilo Alejandro; Flores Andrade, Fernando Augusto
The construction of infrastructure projects, involves a series of risks, for its own employees and subcontractors, some of these risks cannot be avoided, so it is necessary to deploy engineering control measures as priority, administrative measures, and as a last alternative, regulating the use of personal protective equipment, obviously, these measures entail costs which affect the outcome of the project. Through the present, proposes a methodology through the application of simple arrays to identify and calculate the costs of work-related accidents, which can be used in construction projects. As specific objectives, we sought to: (i) systematize the identification of direct and indirect costs of work-related accidents, (ii) simplify the calculation of these costs; and, (iii) establish relations that allow to assess the incidence of such costs, with regard to the management of occupational health and safety of the project Analyzed the costs of work accidents raised in the last two years, of a construction company (the same that has been identified as a contractor C1), in a project in the country (which was denominated as PH1), on which remained absolute confidentiality. On the basis of the analysis of data obtained, was designed the methodology for achieving the proposed objectives, the interest is based on the fact that there are no practical methodologies and recognized in order to achieve this objective of assessing the incidence of the costs of accidents in the management of security, that complies with legal guidelines, in force in Ecuador.

(2017) Lazo Sarmiento, Tatiana Verónica; Flores Andrade, Fernando Augusto
This research is intended to establish the relationship between ergonomic risks factors in the workstations of the refrigerators’ assembly line, and the occurrence of musculoskeletal disorders. Firstly, the ergonomic risk in eight workstations was evaluated after an initial diagnosis was carried-out by using a checklist. On a second stage, RULA, REBA and OWAS methodologies were applied to evaluate the ergonomic risks at the workstations. In order to identify musculoskeletal disorders (MSD), the Nordic Questionnaire was applied to all workers, intended to identify symptoms related to these disorders. The QEC (Quick Exposure Assessment) was also applied, as an observation technique that requires participation of workers to identify risks, and allows a rapid assessment of musculoskeletal disorders. Based on identification and evaluation of ergonomic risks, the author issued a technical plan to control those risks, as well as to mitigate potential musculoskeletal disorders caused to the workers.

(2017) Carrillo Estrella, María Augusta; Flores Andrade, Fernando Augusto
This investigation is focused in a group of employees working in the “Decoration Section” of Artesa Cía. Ltda., a Company based in Cuenca - Ecuador, which main economic activity is manufacturing and commercialization of utilitarian ceramic products with hand painted decoration. The group of interest, is in fact the one in charge of painting these well recognized products. The main objective of the investigation was to determine the level of exposure to ergonomic risks the workers have to comply with their specific tasks. This study includes the theoretical and legal framework on ergonomic risks, as well as the detailed description of the methodology, the characterization of the group analyzed, and also the description of the different work-sites. In the practical area, a recognition of the work locations was done, the triple matrix criterion was applied to determine which locations to evaluate and five were obtained. The methodologies of evaluation: Check list OCRA, REBA and the NIOSH equation were posteriorly applied to these. A questionnaire was also used with all workers of the section, in order to determine relevant information related to effects of exposure to those risks. Lastly, the presence of a high risk level for forced postures in the five work locations was determined. In regards to repetivie movements, a moderate risk was seen for the signaling and tracing locations, and a high risk was obtained for decorating, varnishing and varnishing asistant. There was not a significant risk related to the manual manipulation of loads. Based on results of the evaluation, a proposal for ergonomic risk management was issued to minimize the muscle-skeletal disorders identified in the study.

(2016) Vásquez Palacios, Augusta Renata; Flores Andrade, Fernando Augusto
This work was carried out in an Asphalt Concrete Plant, where we examined noise, considered a risk factor, under the following perspectives: Occupational Health, and Industrial Safety and Hygiene. This holistic approach defines the influence that this labor risk exerts on the loss of auditory acuity. Initially, the present work establishes the current theoretical and legal framework on noise; secondly, it describes the methodology of the analysis, operationalization of variables, and defines the sample to be studied. Then, we proceed to typify the population, the studied area and productive activities. In the framework of the Industrial Hygiene, we monitored the exposure of the sound pressure level and compared the results to the permissible level (TWA 8 hours) embedded in the "Safety and Health Regulation for Workers and Improving the Working Environment (Executive Decree 2393). In terms of Industrial Safety, we explored the current personal protective equipment PPE, and the determining variables. In the field of Occupational Health, we scrutinized personal characteristics of workers, diseases related to deafness, and conducted a survey on noise exposure. Finally, the present work reached a conclusion that in the examined company, there the employees are exposed to noise at work. By examining the state of hearing health of employees, the high incidence of healthy staff was determined and, lastly, the work defined control measures, while emphasizing the results concluded in this study, such as changes in equipment and machinery, good work practices, training and capacity-raising plans for employees.

(2019-11-22) Valarezo Jaramillo, Luis Eduardo; Flores Andrade, Fernando Augusto
This work evaluates the level of risk that usually the welders, assemblers, painters and helpers assume while working in the workshops where metal structures are built, as well as in the places where those structures are finally assemble. This research provides information on the current situation of workers, providing a systematic and structured description of the type of ergonomic risks to which they are exposed in their daily activities, access to the systems of protection and finally the record of health and safety concerns as a result of exposure to these risks. Videos and photographs of tasks have been analyzed under the Checklist OCRA Methodology, and the most frequent task on daily activities was also analyzed under RULA and REBA methods. All images were analyzed by using the KINOVEA and ERGOFELLOW software. Administrative and engineering measures are proposed in such a way that diseases related to ergonomic conditions that can reach a skeletal muscular system can be avoided.
