Item Cribado de sarcopenia en adultos mayores de la Fundación Santa María de la Esperanza, período septiembre 2025 - febrero 2026(Universidad de Cuenca. Facultad de Ciencias Médicas, 2026-02-20) Maza Castillo, Edinson Vicente; Fajardo Chica, Melissa Gabriela; Deleg Quichimbo, Clara LeonorBackground: Sarcopenia is a geriatric syndrome characterized by the progressive loss of skeletal muscle mass and function, causing functional limitations that can lead to falls, fractures, hospitalization, and death. Objective: To determine the risk of sarcopenia in older adults residing at the Santa María de la Esperanza Foundation. Methods: A quantitative, descriptive, cross-sectional study was conducted, in which the SARC-F questionnaire was administered to institutionalized older adults to assess their risk of sarcopenia. Other important sociodemographic and clinical variables were also considered, such as sex, age, musculoskeletal injuries, and calf circumference. Variable analysis was performed using absolute frequencies, percentages, and measures of central tendency and dispersion, as appropriate for each variable. The association between dependent and independent variables was determined using Fisher's exact test, considering a significance level of p < 0,05. Results: The study found that 55% of the study population were women. 85% of all participants presented a risk of sarcopenia, with this risk increasing proportionally with age. Furthermore, a statistically significant association was identified between the risk of sarcopenia and sex (p=0005). Conclusion: A high frequency of sarcopenia risk was observed in institutionalized older adults. This could be the result of physical limitations and comorbidities or chronic conditions that hinder the performance of physical activity.
