This research delves into one of the most controversial dynamics of Ecuador’s contemporary political landscape: political defection. This phenomenon, understood as the opportunistic mobility of actors between parties and movements without ideological or programmatic justification, has had profound repercussions on party institutionalization and public trust. Through a constitutional and political science lens, it becomes evident how the lack of clear and proportional regulation has allowed this practice to erode internal party coherence, distort the principle of representation, and further fragment the political system. Using a mixed methodology —combining documentary analysis and semi-structured interviews— this thesis not only aims to diagnose the problem but also to open the debate on the viability of implementing legal reforms that regulate political defection without infringing upon political rights. Instead, it is presented as an opportunity to strengthen internal democracy, reinforce commitment to coherent ideological platforms, and uphold the legitimacy of those who exercise power on behalf of the citizenry.
