(Universidad de Cuenca, 2025-08-27) Estrella Ortega, Janneth Patricia; Illaisaca Espinoza, Anibal Ismael; Tenezaca Tacuri, Ángel Hipólito
Background: in Ecuador, according to SOLCA, 3563 cases of breast cancer were diagnosed in 2020. Surgery is one of the current treatments, and postoperative scar quality significantly influences patient satisfaction. General Objective: to characterize patients after oncological breast surgery based on clinical variables and scar quality using the POSAS questionnaire at SOLCA Cuenca, Ecuador, during the period from February to May 2024. Methodology: descriptive cross-sectional study. Patients over 18 years who underwent breast surgery at SOLCA were included, excluding those with incomplete medical records or who withdrew from the study. Scar quality was assessed using the POSAS questionnaire with prior patient consent, and data were analyzed with Epiinfo. Results: 49 patients were included. Finding middle-aged adults (69.39%), urban residents (53.06%), homemakers (51.02%), conservative surgery (51.02%) without prior clinical treatment (61.22%), smokers (14.29%), diabetic (12.24%), hypertensive (18.37%). Mean PSAS score: 28.42 ± 11.195; mean OSAS score: 19.49 ± 8.991. Conclusions: most common characteristics were middle-aged adults, urban residents, homemakers, overweight, conservative surgery without prior treatment. Majority had no comorbidities, but smoking, diabetes, and hypertension were present. Low POSAS scores were found, with patients rating scar quality higher than observers.
