(2018) Brito Bravo, Eugenio Sebastián; Espinoza Cisneros, Daniela Carolina; Durán Aguilar, Edgar Javier
Domestic spaces related to water have been changing throughout history, particularly in the 20th century, as a result of cultural and technological changes. Both urban and residential scale, the city of Cuenca has also experienced great transformations throughout this century. The current work is part of a wider research project called “Transformations of the domestic spaces and lifestyle in Cuenca during the XX and XXI centuries” and focused on identifying the transformations related with the incorporation of water and sewage infrastructure during the 20th century in Cuenca. For this purpose, the background of the mentioned infrastructure in the settlements that preceded the 20th century, was determined. After so, the systems of water and sewage during the 20th century, were described and finally the alterations produced by these systems in the houses of Cuenca during the 20th century were analyzed. For this research, publications carried out at local level were analyzed, in order to understand the sewage system and water supply for the city. the printed press was consulted and interviews were conducted, determining the main periods related with potable water inside the house and a digital reconstruction of eleven cases was made. The results let determinate, among others, that it was not until the mid-twentieth century that the bathroom appears inside the house as a result of the construction of the sewage system and water supply for the city. The study provided an approach to the historical memory of the domestic spaces and the city.
