BACKGROUND Neonatal morbidity and mortality have been one of the main problems of Third World countries like ours. In our study-population it there was a lack of morbidity and mortality statics, for this reason the project was driven to generatea reliable statistical basis. OBJECTIVE To describe the most common causes ofmaternal and neonatal morbidity /mortality and the quality of health care at Hospital "José Carrasco Arteaga." METHODS In this descriptive study The SIP was used to collect data from Perinatal Clinical histories. Also a review of the Book of Births and INEC Database were made. RESULTS We found that the main cause of maternal morbidity are hypertensive disorders (33.53%), followed by premature labor threat (26.34%). Other pathologies such as Urinary tract infections, bleeding, Cholestatic syndrome, hyperemesisgravidarum, vaginosis, and anemia had a lower incidence. There was one maternal death caused by septic shock after an infection in utero (fetal death). The main cause of neonatal morbidity was the ABO incompatibility (36.50%), followed by respiratory disorders such as respiratory distress and pneumonia; other more serious diseases such as sepsis, Rh incompatibility were also present but less frequently. Eight deaths occurred in the area of neonatology because of congenital (50%) and respiratory malformations (50%).
