Nowadays, there are many wireless technologies that work in the 2.4GHz ISM band. This is extremely true for data networks in the local and personal area, which are called WLAN and WPAN, respectively. Considering the growing popularity of IEEE802.11 standard and the great 6LoWPAN potential of use related to IoT (which works with the IEEE 802.15.4 standard), it raises a several questions related to their coexistence specifically referring to the interference between them. This paper examines the effects of IEEE 802.11 standard over IEEE 802.15.4 transmissions, by analyzing delays and loss of connectivity when they work simultaneously. The study has made by implementing a prototype network using hardware Waspmote 6LoWPAN, Libelium developed in partnership with IBM development platform, Mote Runner. This prototype network is exposed to different interference conditions caused by the IEEE 802.11 standard. Measures are have been tabulated and analyzed in order to explain different behaviors and determine the best conditions to minimize delay and optimize the performance of transmissions.
