This research will evaluate in a first phase the technical feasibility of reusing wash water from the Tixán Drinkable Water Treatment Plant (DWTP) in Cuenca, Ecuador, as an option to optimize the use of water resources in the face of growing climate challenges and prolonged periods of drought. This study will focus on the characterization of the clarified effluents from the washing of decanters and filters. Laboratory analyses were carried out on different dates to determine key parameters, considering the DWTP characteristics and comparing them with the limits established in Ecuadorian regulations. The results indicate that most parameters are within the permissible limits and that the plant has the adequate processes for their treatment; the lead concentrations could suggest the need for a prior treatment. Several options for the treatment of the wash water at the plant were studied, proposing a feasible solution for its reconditioning. The recoverable water volume could cover a considerable population demand, demonstrating the high potential of this practice in the optimization of water resources.
