    Epidemiología de la mortalidad materna en la provincia del Azuay, Cuenca 2010-2014

    Introduction: According to the WHO, approximately 303,000 women die from complications of pregnancy and childbirth each year. The 99% of these deaths occur in low- and middle-income countries Objective: To describe the epidemiology of Maternal Mortality in the province of Azuay, Basin 2010-2014. Material and methods: a descriptive study of the cases of maternal deaths registered in the province of Azuay from 2010 to 2014. Were reviewed the data of the INEC. The main source of information was clinical histories and documents of medical audits. Developed a digital database and were analyzed using the SPSS software v.15. Results: maternal mortality in the province of Azuay has declined from a rate of 68.54 in 2010 to 19.08 in the year 2014. The 69.57 % of the deaths are by direct causes mainly by eclampsia 25.0 % and postpartum hemorrhage 18.75 %. The majority of the deaths were registered or general hospitals in 33 (71.8 %). According to the stage of pregnancy 6 (13.0 %) died during pregnancy, 3 (6.5 %) during childbirth and 37 (80.4 %) in the puerperium. A third 13 (28.3 %) of women who died were not maternal controls during pregnancy. According to reports and the characteristics of the maternal deaths 38 (82.6 %) could be avoidable. Mainly identified delays of type I. Conclusions: maternal mortality in the province of Azuay in recent years has declined, the causes are mostly preventable and it must improve the attention for it to be timely and quality
