The Impact of Using Virtual Language Exchanges on Speaking and Listening Skills of University Students
(Universidad de Cuenca, 2024-07-26) Cordero Romero, Romina Nicole; Calle Calle, María Daniela
Virtual Language Exchanges (VLEs) involve using online communication tools to connect classes of learners from different geographical locations. This program aims to enhance listening, speaking, reading, writing, as well as digital literacy, and intercultural competence through collaborative online tasks and projects. In recent years, these exchange programs have been developed in various university education settings and contexts (O’Dowd, 2017). However, within the field of foreign language teaching, the use of VLEs is not a common practice in the classroom. To evaluate the benefits and drawbacks of digital language exchanges, this research synthesis reviewed 15 studies conducted on the topic. The purpose of my study is to examine the effectiveness of using these programs to improve listening and speaking skills in university students. Articles from the past 10 years were considered in this research to ensure that the collected data and information for analysis were comprehensive and relevant. It was evident that these exchanges offer multiple advantages in developing auditory and oral skills, such as enhancing students' proficiency in the English language, motivating them, and stimulating their creativity and participation in classes. Therefore, greater integration of this approach is recommended in university educational environments to foster digital competence and English language skills.
