Item Me he suicidado: violencia de género en Cuenca del siglo XIX exponiendo a Fray Vicente Solano y a la poetisa María Dolores Veintimilla(2013) Chin Cali, Polivio Israel; Álvarez Palomeque, Julio EfraínIn the nineteenth century, Ecuadorean women experienced a period of submission and isolation, without the right to study and to be respected by men who used to manifest patriarchal attitudes, which were rather an arbitrary, sexist and demeaning expression against the cultural proposals of women. One example was the Cuencan priest Fray Vicente Solano, who insulted and marginalized María Dolores Veintimilla de Galindo in order to isolate her from the high society. This action was conducted together with the hypocritical and saintly Cuencan society, making their victim feel so intimidated that she committed suicide just because the shameful intellect of that authoritative priest could not admit that a woman could be involved in literature or to disagree with the conservative traditions of the Cuencan people. With this background, as a nonconformist attitude it was decided to express our thoughts by using contemporary visual languages and changing the name of Fray Vicente Solano Avenue to M. Dolores Veintimilla Avenue using stickers to be pasted on such street signs. This artistic task aims to condemn those famous people who, in spite of their positive influence, hurt us by means of their power and social status. This work has been developed through field research; a deep reflection on our history is expected
