This study presented the objective of identifying the financial risks faced by SMEs in the Ecuadorian construction sector, civil engineering and other activities related to construction. For the investigation, a sample of 204 SMEs from the study sector corresponding to the 24 provinces of Ecuador was used. It was detected that the main economic risks are related to over-indebtedness and short investment recovery times. Likewise, it was identified that 62,50% of the examination entities are at risk of insolvency. On the other hand, it was found that companies have insufficient liquidity and credit risk as high deficiency indicators are obtained with respect to these parameters, in addition, the lack of provisions to mitigate these risks considerably favor the increase in insecurities in construction SMEs. In addition to this, it was determined that market variations could cause a decrease in the value of assets, being the cause of economic losses and poor results presented by the examination entities. Finally, to mitigate these risks, control strategies and proposals were proposed.
