Item Determinación de hemoglobina glicosilada en pacientes diabéticos insulino-dependientes. Hospital del I.E.S.S. Cuenca 1988(Universidad de Cuenca, 1988-11-11) Bailón Abad, Mónica; Castro Costa, Rita; Cordero Espinoza, Juan; Alvarez Herrera, María HermelindaDiabetes mellitus is a heterogeneous clinical syndrome characterized by alterations in the metabolism of carbohydrates and other nutrients, the development of specific vascular lesions (such as microangiopathy), and an increased risk of atherosclerosis. Its social importance lies in its high incidence, affecting more than 4% of the population and steadily rising, influenced by obesity and increased longevity in Western countries. As a chronic and incurable condition, it is associated with severe pathologies such as blindness, renal failure, ischemic heart disease, and obliterative arteriopathy, leading to significant healthcare and social costs. Although complications partly depend on individual factors, poor metabolic control accelerates their progression. Therefore, treatment must be implemented even when symptoms are mild or absent, and its effectiveness is assessed through parameters that reflect the degree of metabolic control.
