(2019-03-13) Arévalo Salamea, Byron Andrés; Castillo Mogrovejo, Adriana Marcela; Parra Parra, Jorge Leonidas
Background: In the Faculty of Medical Sciences of the University of Cuenca, two mechanisms for obtaining a medical degree are considered. The first has to do with the approval of a complex examination and the second with the preparation of a final research project. In the latter case, empirically, there is evidence of a series of situations that hinder its realization. Objective: determine strengths and difficulties in the elaboration of the final research project prior obtaining a medical degree in the medical school at the University of Cuenca. Methodology: it is a descriptive quantitative cross-sectional study, 257 physicians graduated between 2015 to 2017 from the University of Cuenca were selected through simple random sampling and an electronic inquest was carried out, this inquest was previously elaborated and validated by the authors. The data was collected by means of a virtual question form with Linkert questions. The information was processed through the "SPSS version 22.0 and Microsoft Excel 2013" program. Results: the age was 26.55 years. Female sex predominated with 52.5%, and graduates in 2017. 82.1% considered that the knowledge acquired through the set of credits approved in undergraduate, "were not sufficient" for the completion of the final research project. 70.8% had a "partial" knowledge of the existence of guidelines to elaborate a research protocol and only 22.6% affirmed a significant contribution of the same. Difficulties were found in almost all the methodological aspects when executing the final research project, with 37% highlighted difficulty in the structuring of the methodological frameworks. 40% revealed not knowing about the existence of the research lines of the Faculty of Medical Sciences, before starting the project. Findings: the difficulties that the study population presents when carrying out a final research project are high, contrasting with the strengths, finding a significant relationship with different factors.
