(Universidad de Cuenca, 2024-11-08) Castillo Herrera, Ariana Paola; Crespo Díaz, Rebeca Estefanía; Abad Vázquez, Jaime Patricio
Background: Erectile dysfunction (ED) is a common health issue that has increased among young men, with a frequently psychogenic etiology. Medical students due to academic stress, long hours, and poor sleep quality, may be particularly vulnerable to this condition. Objective: To determine the frequency of ED in seventh to tenth academic cycle students at the University of Cuenca during the year 2024. Methods: A descriptive, observational, cross-sectional study was conducted with a sample of 90 men. A self-administered questionnaire was used, which included general data and the International Index of Erectile Function (IIEF-5). The data was analyzed using Microsoft Excel 2019, applying descriptive statistics. Results: A total of 54% of respondents reported no ED, while 40% experienced mild ED. The 4% had mild to moderate ED, and only 1% reported moderate ED. IIEF-5 scores ranged from 11 to 25, with an average of 22 points and a 95% confidence interval suggesting a population average between 21.38 and 22.62 points. Conclusions: ED is a significant issue affecting the quality of life of young men. The IIEF-5 is established as a valuable tool for the diagnosis and management of ED in this population.
