The present study evaluated the influence of the lunar cycle on the serum concentrations of cortisol, insulin, and total, direct, and indirect bilirubins in guinea pigs. A total of 80 serum samples were collected from nulliparous pubescent guinea pigs from the “Imperio del Cuy” farm in Bulán, Paute, Azuay, Ecuador. Samples were collected from five guinea pigs during each of the four phases of the lunar cycle: New Moon (NM), First Quarter (FQ), Full Moon (FM), and Third Quarter (TQ), across four consecutive lunar cycles. The guinea pigs were anesthetized with sevoflurane before cardiac puncture to obtain 10 ml of blood, which was centrifuged, and the resulting serum was frozen for subsequent analysis. The effect of the lunar cycle on the aforementioned variables was analyzed using analysis of variance with a general linear model. Means were compared using the least squares test. The results showed a significant influence of the lunar cycle on the serum concentration of cortisol (P = 0.0085) and insulin (P = 0.0419) during the FQ and FM phases, respectively. No significant differences were found in the serum concentration of bilirubin. In conclusion, the phases of the lunar cycle affected insulin and cortisol concentrations but did not influence the concentrations of total, direct, or indirect bilirubin.
