Item Desplazamiento accidental del tercer molar: una revisión sistemática(Universidad de Cuenca, 2023-11-06) Caivinagua Pesántez, Ana Lucía; Cárdenas Yela, Natasha Corazón; Crespo Reinoso, Pablo AndrésThird molar displacement (TM) is a rare complication that occurs in both the maxilla as well as the mandible and can be of complete teeth or root fragments. The objective was to conduct a systematic review of clinical cases of third molar displacement in the PubMed database, obtaining a total of 50 articles. The most frequent site to which a third molar is displaced in the maxilla is to the infratemporal fossa while in the mandible it is to the submandibular space. The incidence was higher in women than in men with a 2:1 rate; the distolingual position of the tooth and the thin bony cortical lamina are predisposing factors for displacement and the main symptoms reported by the patients were limited mouth opening and pain. A correct imaging diagnosis will facilitate better treatment planning to reduce complications in surgery and if any complication occurs during or after the procedure, an experienced specialist should treat it. Likewise, the early or late extraction of the displaced third molar will be decided by the specialist evaluating the symptomatology of each patient.
