This research project has the objective of identifying the formal values of the traditional dwellings in Ecuador, in this case; the focuses are the populated centers of the rural towns of Loja, Ecuador: Chuquiribamba and Chantaco, this former one was declared a cultural heritage of Ecuador. This research tries to discover the architectural tradition, sometimes studied for historical and cultural ends, as ar architectural learning tool. This study is directed toward their formal values (balanced relationships between: place, architectural program and construction), in which the concepts of order, scale, relation and proportions are embedded as urban examples developed around a central square. To analyze this, there will be a study of buildings as elements and urban segments, placed around the central squares, established as heritage goods by the INPC (National Institute of Cultural Heritage), their criteria for measuring new buildings and their criteria of intervention. This means, studying every urban event around the main central square of these towns. Rebuilding each individual architectural project, by segments and as a whole ensemble, architecture transmits in formal terms, the essential attributes of this reality. Even though this research project started by studying Chuquiribamba and Chantaco, during the analysis, it was necessary to mention and include the town of Gualel, to complete the urban episode in function of the road that connects rural towns in Loja.
