The development of the present thesis starts analyzing the most important architectural features related to the topic of housing for each of the cultural periods that were developed in the area of what today is Cuenca, recognizing that in the first three periods, any type of construction was developed in an empirical manner. The analysis of terminologies such as empirical, autodidaxy and “architecture without architects” caused the mentioning of important figures in architecture and important foremen as Juan Luis Lupercio who has developed outstanding work without an academic formation. On the other hand, the compilation and organization of jobs completed by Juan Luis Luperciorequired the investigation of different methods in order to develop a proper method based on registry and catalog sheets. This information was used later on to elaborate a time line of Lupercio’s work and by implementing and applying different assesment criteria to each one of the jobs the information expanded and the assesment of each one of these jobs was confirmed. Finally, three of Lupercio’s buildings were studied in order to analyze the empirical knowledge, the skills in the reinterpretation of facades of imported designs and the adaptation of materials and local construction techniques.
