The theory of sustainability is becoming increasingly important in the field of architecture, due to the lack of optimization of resources that is a global problem. Sustainable construction is a multidimensional topic, in which many factors can contribute or impair it, one of these factors is the energy saving of housing, which is essential to achieve the objective of conservation of resources, thereby reducing environmental pollution. Despite the existence of an Ecuadorian regulation of the construction, in force, with chapters emphasized in energy efficiency, it can be shown that the standards managed by it, are insufficient for the current reality; If we add to this the lack of control and regulation at the time of the execution of the works, we can show that the result are housing or buildings that generally respond more to economic interests. Faced with the problem mentioned above, is pertinent that it is the academy the one to do the first steps to achieve energy efficiency standards, suitable for our reality, is so the research project of the University of Cuenca “Método de Certificación de la Construcción Sustentable de Viviendas” has developed energy indicators to evaluate housing in the city. This work seeks to develop energy efficiency strategies for the design of single-family homes in the city of Cuenca based on the evaluation criteria defined in the research project mentioned. The operation of the proposed strategies will be corroborated by virtual simulations applied in a case study.
