    Tipo de sustancias usadas en el intento de suicidio y en el suicidio, en el área de emergencia del departamento de Clínica del H.V.C.M. en la ciudad de Cuenca durante el período 1999-2003

    This paper presents a retrospective descriptive study of the type of substances used in the suicide attempt and suicide in the area of ​​emergency department HVCM clinic was performed. It was chosen as study universe all cases of attempted suicide and suicide by ingestion of substances that went to the emergency areas of the various health services of the city of Cuenca; as shown in the cases recorded in the book of daily portion of area emergency clinic took HVCM. The objectives were, knowing the type most commonly used substances; set the frequency of suicide attempts and suicide; identify risk groups; classify the substances used; set the type of treatment, and determine mortality rates. The variables were, kind of substance, attempted suicide, completed suicide, age, sex, marital status, residence and treatment. The data collected were tabulated using the Excel program and analyzed with charts and graphs, concluding that in the 680 cases found, the three substances most used were; organophosphates and Coumarin unknown substances; most cases are between 15 and 24 years, with a predominance of suicide attempts among females, single, residing in urban areas, the mortality rate was 5.29% predominance in males
