It is located within the surgical procedures performed more frequently after caesarean section. Often, hysterectomy is important for treatment of female pathology resource; whether in the field of gynecology or obstetrics constitute an important resource that can save the life of the patient. Objective: To determine the prevalence and causes of hysterectomy in women attending the Department of Gynaecology and Obstetrics at Hospital José Carrasco Arteaga in the city of Cuenca. Materials and Methods: This was a descriptive study of cross section, which was performed by obtaining information on the statistics department of the Hospital José Carrasco Arteaga city of Cuenca in 2012, with a sample of 218 patients. Medical records, file services statistics and pathology were reviewed; Data were collected on a previously designed form. Data were entered and analyzed using SPSS 21.0 program. Results: The mean age was at 47.53 years with a SD of 8.3 years. The prevalence of hysterectomies was 15.36% of all patients with surgery. The most common gynecologic pathology found in women a hysterectomy is performed fibroids corresponds to 55.96% of the total. Obstetric pathology showed placenta accreta corresponds to a single case equivalent to 0.45%. The most frequent approach was 88.5% with total abdominal hysterectomy type. Conclusion: Hysterectomy is the second most common surgery performed after cesarean section and its most common cause is uterine fibroids.
