BACKGROUND: Early weaning refers to the withdrawal of exclusive breastfeeding before six months of age. It is considered a public health problem; it is caused by several factors, leading to high morbidity and mortality of infants. According to the WHO in 2014, 38% of infants aged zero to six months are exclusively breastfed. GENERAL OBJECTIVE: To determine the prevalence of early weaning and associated factors in children aged 0-2 years old attending to Health Center No. 1 of the city of Cuenca, in 2015. METHODOLOGY: The research was conducted using a cross-sectional study. The population used was 8060 children aged 0-2 years old, with a sample size of 346 children, chosen through a subjective sampling by reasoned decision. The data obtained are presented in tables, statistical association was sought using chi2 confidence level of 95% and p value (0.05). RESULTS: Of 346 children aged 0-2 years old surveyed in the Health Center No. 1 a prevalence of 14.5% early weaning was found; 70% of the early weaning was between the ages of zero to two months. The prevalence of early weaning in children and their associated factors were those whose mothers are: older than 30 years old (18%), residents of the urban area (15%), dedicated to study (16%), with tertiary level of education (18%) and who are single (18%). CONCLUSIONS: This research found early weaning with a prevalence of 14.5% being the main reason hypogalactia (44%). However, no statistically significant values were associated with the factors described in this research
