Objective. Determine the prevalence and factors associated with the addiction to video games in adolescent students of the Unidad Educativa Particular “La Asunción”, of the city of Cuenca during the school year 2017-2018. Methodology. With a cross-sectional design, 246 students were selected through simple random sampling and an automatic interview was conducted. Information was collected on sociodemographic variables and validated instrument. The prevalence of addiction and associated factors were calculated using PR (95% CI) and contingency tables. Values of p <0.05 are considered significant. Results. Fifteen cases were excluded. In 231 students it was found that the prevalence of addiction was 31.1% (24.9 - 37.0) and was higher in males. The associated factors were: play every day [PR 5.2 (95% CI: 3.2 - 8.3)], play more than 3 hours a day [PR 4.1 (95% CI: 3.1 - 6.9)], start in video games <9 years [ PR 2.8 (95% CI: 1.6 - 4.9)], male sex [PR 2.6 (95% CI: 1.6 - 4.1)], family dysfunction [PR 2.5 (95% CI: 1.6 - 3.7)], anxiety and depression [PR 2.3 (95% CI: 1.6 - 3.3)] and drug use and addiction [PR 1.9 (95% CI: 1.1 - 3.1)] Conclusions. The factors associated with video game addiction were those described by the medical literature, although the prevalence was higher. Despite being included in the ICD-11 there is disagreement among experts about the rigors to label the abuse of digital games as conduct disorder
