ABSTRACT There are 32 waste water treatment plants around the rural area of Cuenca city. For this work, a record card was developed for each of those treatment plants. The record card included all the main characteristics of the plant, which were observed during inspections carried out between December 10th and January 15th. Furthermore, a bibliographic review of treatment technologies applied in the rural area was made. On the other hand, data from past evaluations performed in the plants (years 2005, 2009, 2010 and 2014) was collected and organized. With this data, the average values of the removal parameters were obtained and the removal efficiency of the septic tanks, anaerobic filters and wetlands was analyzed. Staff from ETAPA collaborated for the field visits to the treatment plants, with whom it was concluded that: the wastewater treatment plants do not have enough space for the maintenance work that is required and some of the plants do not even have an enabled access; there is a high contribution of illicit water to the sewage system which must be noticed when designing, building and maintaining the wastewater system (treatment plants and sewerage).
