    Valor del antígeno prostático en el diagnóstico de patología prostática (hiperplasia benigna de próstata, prostatitis y cáncer prostático), Hospital José Carrasco Arteaga, 2011-2012, Cuenca-Ecuador

    Objective: Value of the prostatic Antigen in the diagnosis of prostatic disease (benign hyperplasia of prostate, prostatitis and prostate cancer), Hospital José Carrasco Arteaga, 2011-2012, Cuenca-Ecuador. Methods: It was a descriptive study carried out in the José Carrasco Arteaga Hospital of Cuenca City in 1000 patients with PSA serum determination. We reviewed clinical history of patients gathering age data, level of instruction, marital status, value of PSA, diagnosis and symptoms that led to the apply of the mentioned blood test; we entered data into SPSS software version 19 for Windows and the results are presented at frecuency tables. Results: The average age of the population ranked 67,12 years with a standard deviation of 9.76 years; being the group of higher prevalence patients older than 65 years with 54.3%; 44.1% of the population present a level of secondary education, 96.1% were of mixed race and 94.7% were unmarried; the most frequent pathology was BPH with 88.8% followed by the prostate cancer with 9.4% and prostatitis with 1.8%; the average PSA value stood at 3.91 ng/ml with a standard deviation of 10.9 ng/ml; the most common symptoms were dysuria with 62.2% and polyaquiuria with 37.8%; in patients with prostate cancer 27.7% presented high PSA, BPH 19.6% and in patients with prostatitis 33.3% Conclusions: The PSA is a serum marker with great value for the early detection of prostate pathology either benign or malignant and their use should be recommended.
