The objective of this present investigation is to identify social demographic characteristics of returning migrants to Cuenca County. This investigation also aims to determine and analyze the reasons for their return. First utilizing the population and housing census conducted in 2010, information is obtained on the volume and characteristics of those returning. Second, data collected by the Andean Survey of Migration and Remittances (ASMR) was used to determine the motives and economic activity of those who returned in different phases of migration. The information provided by different databases coincide that those who returned were mostly married men in productive age, head of household, with a general education, and were often returning from the United States. The years in which the majority returned were 2008 and 2013 with the first journey being longer than the second. Over time I found that the principal motive was the value of being with family, which can be disputed. Lastly, the percentage of people that found themselves in the labor field was less in the first and second phase; meanwhile in the third phase it increased.
