This review aimed to summarize research conducted about the influence of saliva contamination on adhesion, based on the results of original scientific full-length papers from peer-reviewed journals listed in PubMed. The search was conducted using the term "saliva", "composite", "contamination", "bond strenght". According to the majority of the in vitro results, saliva contamination impairs adhesión to dental structures. In this context, the use of rubber dam is mandatory in order to obtain success in esthetical adhesive restorations.
