Abstract: | Introduction: Cervical Uterine Cancer is of high morbidity, but can be preventable when
diagnosed early, hence the importance of women being systematically tested for Pap smears.
General Objective: To determine the characteristics of Pap smears in women treated in the
gynecology-obstetrics area in the Health Center N°1 Pumapungo in the period 2017-2018
Methods and Materials: retrospective and descriptive study. Technique: data collection form.
SPSS statistical package version 22.0 was used. The data were processed in contingency tables
using descriptive and frequency statistics. X2 and p<. 05 were used.
Results: Sample 494 women, mean age 38.81 years; the most affected age group was 20-29
years. In the study 166 (33.6%) PAP tests were normal and 328 (66.4%) abnormal. Cytological
report: 11 women (3.3%) with atypical squamous cells of uncertain significance (ASCUS), 4
(1.2%) with low-grade squamous intraepithelial lesions (LSIL), 103 (31.4%) infectious and 210
(64%) inflammatory. Bacillary flora prevailed as an etiologic agent (36.0%), 15.8% cocoid flora
and 43.3% without etiologic agent.
Conclusions: The frequency with which women took the Pap smear was not associated with age,
level of education, ethnicity or origin and if it was associated with marital status. Cellular
abnormalities were not associated with the use of oral contraceptives and the number of
gestations, but they were associated with inflammatory and infectious processes. |
