| Abstract: | Objective: To determine the efficacy of Dutasteride´s treatment for 6 months for a group of patients diagnosed with Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia in “Vicente Corral Moscoso” Regional Hospital.
Methods and materials: It presents a descriptive study completed in “Vicente Corral Moscoso” Regional Hospital in Cuenca’s city. The size of the sample was 60 patients from a universe of 225, it was chosen by convenience and the selected patients were diagnosed of moderate and severe benign prostatic hyperplasia taking the following parameters: ultrasound and blood measured PSA (until 6ng/ml.). We interview our group of patients the “International Prostate Symptom Score” admitted by the World Health Organization.All patients received single therapy with Dutasteride (5 mg QD) for 6 months. The information was analyzed with Microsoft Excel and Epi-Info. In our study we apply statistics measures with duplicate entries and inferential analysis, Chi 2, confidence interval, mean difference, etc.
Results: The average age of patients was 69.72 ± 8.92 years, in relation to the civil status 66.67 % were married. The Prostate Specific Antigen average at the beginning was: 4.07ng and wtih 6 months of treatment it value decreased to: 3.38ng with a Z score of 6.55 (p < 0.001). The variation in prostate weight was not statistically significant with a Z = 0 (p > 0.05) score after a 6-month treatment. With the following symptoms vesical tenesmus (Chi2: 5.71), polaquiria (Chi2:8.57) and intermittent urinary flow (Chi2:8.57) a significant difference was obtained after a 3-month treatment. Between the starting point and 6 months of therapy there was a improvement statistically significant for: polaquiria (Chi2:9.73), intermittent urinary flow (Chi2:10.91) and nycturia (Chi2:8.09) , excluding mictional urgency, which did not reach statistically significance. On the improvement between 3 and 6 months of treatment, no significant difference was found in any symptoms of the scale.
Conclusion: After a 6-months therapy with Dutasteride isn’t safe to take therapeutic decisions because of the statistically lower improvements to the end of this period of time. We consider recommendable larger studies in a longer period of time for accurate results and bearing in mind collateral effects.

| Description: | Objetivo: Determinar la eficacia del Dutasteride en un grupo de pacientes diagnosticados de Hiperplasia Prostática Benigna en el Hospital Regional “Vicente Corral Moscoso”.
Métodos y materiales: Se detalla un estudio descriptivo que se realizó en el Hospital Regional Vicente Corral Moscoso de la ciudad de Cuenca. El tamaño de la muestra fue de 60 pacientes de un universo de 225, escogida por conveniencia y los elegidos tenían diagnóstico de hiperplasia prostática benigna moderada a severa mediante estudio ecográfico y cuantificación de PSA en sangre de hasta 6ng/ml. La recolección de datos fue por entrevista mediante la contestación del cuestionario de IPSS, un sistema internacional de síntomas prostáticos, validado por OMS. Todos los pacientes recibieron monoterapia con Dutasteride (5mg QD). El manejo y análisis de la información se lo realizo a través de los programas Microsoft Excel y Epi Info. Se emplearon medidas estadísticas basales de doble entrada con un análisis de tipo inferencial, chi2, intervalo de confianza, diferencia de medias, etc.
Resultados: La edad promedio de los pacientes se ubicó en 69.72 ± 8.92 años, referente al estado civil el 66.67% estaban casados. El promedio del Antígeno Prostático Específico, al inicio fue de: 4.07ng y a 6 meses de tratamiento disminuyó a: 3.38ng con una puntuación Z: 6.55 (p < 0.001). La variación en el peso prostático calculado por ecografía al inicio y a 6 meses no expresó significancia con una puntuación Z=0 (p > 0.05). En la mejoría de la síntomas, se obtuvo una diferencia significativa a los 3 meses en los siguientes padecimientos: tenesmo vesical (Chi2: 5.71), poliaquiuria (Chi2: 8.57) y chorro intermitente (Chi2: 8.57). Entre el inicio y los 6 meses los síntomas con diferencia significativa fueron: poliaquiuria (Chi2: 9.73), chorro intermitente (Chi2: 10.91) y nicturia (Chi2: 8.09), excluyéndose tenesmo vesical, que no alcanzó diferencia significativa. Sobre la mejoría entre los 3 y 6 meses de tratamiento, no se encontró diferencia significativa en algún síntoma de la escala.
Conclusión: La utilización de este medicamento solamente por 6 meses, no resulta segura para la toma de decisiones terapéuticas a posterior, debido a que las mejorías apenas resultarán significativas al finalizar este periodo. Se recomienda realizar estudios a largo plazo, incluyendo el registro de efectos colaterales en el transcurso del mismo.
