| Abstract: | Objective: To determine the prevalence of depression and related factors in patients older than 20 years, admitted to the Department of Internal Medicine Vicente Corral Moscoso Hospital in 2011.
Methods: Cross-sectional study , the sample size was calculated on the basis of 95 % confidence inference with an error of 3.5% and 10 % prevalence of lower frequency factor . Data were obtained by interview and medical history , data were analyzed using SPSS 15 software.
Results: 370 patients were studied , the mean age was 18 ± 56 years DS , women were 55% of the sample. The prevalence of depression was 33.0 % 95% CI 28.0 - 37.0 , in the group of 20-44 years reached 34.9% 95% CI 27.0 - 43.0 and women 34.8 % 95% CI 28.0 - 41.0 . The association depression and gastrointestinal bleeding presented 39.3 % (OR 1.2 , 95% CI 0.9-1.8 , p-value 0.27 ), with 37.7 % diabetic foot (OR 1.2, 95% CI 0.82-1.70 , p value 0.39 ), chronic lung disease 34.4 % (OR 1.1 , 95% CI 0.72-1.53 , p value 0.79) , 31.8 % heart failure (OR 1.0, 95% CI 0.70-1.40 , p-value 0.79 ) in digestive tract cancer 26.7 % (OR 0.80 , 95% CI 0.53 -1.1 , p-value 0.11 ), family history of depression 35 % (OR 1.1 , 95% CI 0.60-2.0 , p value 0.84 ) , basic needs 29.8 % (OR 0.86 , 95% CI 0.60-1.2 , p value 0.33 )
Conclusions: The prevalence of depression in hospitalized patients than that reported in series from other countries, there was no statistical association with pathologies.

Metodología: Estudio transversal, El tamaño de la muestra se calculó sobre la base del 95% de confianza, con un error de inferencia del 3.5% y el 10 % de prevalencia del factor de más baja frecuencia. Los datos se obtuvieron por entrevista e historial clínico; los datos se analizaron con el software SPSS 15.
Resultados: Se estudió 370 pacientes, el promedio de edad fue 56 años DS ± 18; mujeres fueron el 55% de la muestra. La prevalencia de depresión fue 33.0% IC 95% 28.0 – 37.0; en el grupo de 20-44 años alcanzó el 34.9% IC 95% 27.0 – 43.0 y en mujeres 34.8% IC 95% 28.0 – 41.0. La asociación depresión y hemorragia digestiva alta presentó 39.3% (RP 1.2, IC 95% 0.9-1.8, valor p 0.27), con pie diabético 37.7% (RP 1.2, IC95% 0.82-1.70, valor p 0.39), enfermedad pulmonar crónica 34.4% (RP 1.1, IC 95% 0.72-1.53, valor p 0.79), insuficiencia cardiaca 31.8% (RP 1.0, IC95% 0.70-1.40, valor p 0.79), cáncer de tracto digestivo 26.7% (RP 0.80, IC 95% 0.53-1.1, valor p 0.11), antecedentes familiares de depresión 35% (RP 1.1, IC 95% 0.60-2.0, valor p 0.84), necesidades básicas insatisfechas 29.8% (RP 0.86, IC 95% 0.60-1.2, valor p 0.33)
Conclusiones: La prevalencia de depresión en pacientes hospitalizados supera lo reportado en series de otros países, no hubo asociación estadística con patologías.
