| Abstract: | Objective
To determine the prevalence and associated factors with arterial hypertension in patients older than 40 years hospitalized in the Department of internal medicine of the Hospital Vicente Corral Moscoso, during the year 2013.
Material and methods
A cross-sectional study was conducted, in a sample of 460 patients, calculated on the basis of the 95% confidence level, 5% prevalence of Diabetes mellitus type 2 and 2% error of inference, with the following formula Z^2 pq/e^2. The data were collected directly and analyzed with Software SPSS version 15.
Results
The mean age was 66 years ± 16 SD, 54.3% were women, 62.2% lived in urban areas and median years of schooling was 6. The prevalence of hypertension was 52.4% (95% CI 47.8-57.0) in men 45.2% and women 58.4%, and the association was significant with a sedentary lifestyle, dyslipidemia and family history of hypertension (p <0.05) and there was no association with overweight, obesity and smoking (p> 0.05).
Conclusions
The prevalence of hypertension was 52.4% and is associated with sedentary lifestyle, dyslipidemia, type 2 diabetes mellitus and a family history of hypertension.

Determinar la prevalencia y factores asociados a hipertensión arterial esencial en pacientes mayores de 40 a años hospitalizados en el departamento de Medicina Interna del Hospital Vicente Corral Moscoso, durante el 2013.
Material y Métodos
Se realizó un estudio transversal, en una muestra de 460 pacientes calculada sobre la base del 95% de confianza, 5% de prevalencia de Diabetes mellitus tipo 2 y 2% de error de inferencia, se aplicó la fórmula n= Z^2*p*q/e^2. Los datos fueron recolectados directamente y analizados con el Software SPSS versión 15.
Resultados
La media de edad fue de 66 años ± 16 DS, el 54.3% fueron mujeres, el 62.2% residían en el área urbana y la mediana de años de instrucción fue 6. La prevalencia de Hipertensión arterial fue 52.4% (IC95%: 47.8-57.0), en los hombres del 45.2% y en las mujeres del 58.4%, y la asociación fue significativa con el sedentarismo, dislipidemia, diabetes mellitus y antecedentes familiares de la hipertensión arterial (p< 0.05) y no hubo asociación con el sobrepeso, obesidad y tabaquismo (p>0.05).
Conclusiones
La prevalencia de hipertensión arterial fue de 52.4% y está asociada a sedentarismo, dislipidemia, diabetes mellitus tipo 2 y antecedentes familiares de hipertensión arterial.
