Abstract:
The objective of this present investigation is to identify social demographic characteristics of returning migrants to Cuenca County. This investigation also aims to determine and analyze the reasons for their return. First utilizing the population and housing census conducted in 2010, information is obtained on the volume and characteristics of those returning. Second, data collected by the Andean Survey of Migration and Remittances (ASMR) was used to determine the motives and economic activity of those who returned in different phases of migration. The information provided by different databases coincide that those who returned were mostly married men in productive age, head of household, with a general education, and were often returning from the United States. The years in which the majority returned were 2008 and 2013 with the first journey being longer than the second. Over time I found that the principal motive was the value of being with family, which can be disputed. Lastly, the percentage of people that found themselves in the labor field was less in the first and second phase; meanwhile in the third phase it increased. La presente investigación tiene por objetivo identificar las características sociodemográficas de los migrantes de retorno del cantón Cuenca, así como determinar y analizar las razones de su regreso. Utilizando primero, los datos del censo de población y vivienda 2010, se obtiene información del volumen del retorno a nivel cantonal y de las características principales de los que volvieron. Segundo, los datos de la Encuesta Andina de Migración y Remesas (ENAMIR) para complementar información sobre las motivaciones del retorno y la actividad económica de los retornados en las distintas fases del fenómeno migratorio. La información de las dos bases de datos coinciden en que, aquellos que regresaron fueron en su mayoría hombres, casados, en edades productivas, jefes o jefas de hogar, con un nivel de educación medio y provenientes principalmente de Estados Unidos. Los años de mayor retorno fueron entre el 2008 y 2013. Sobre la estancia se encontró que ésta fue más larga en el primero que el último viaje. En cuanto a las motivaciones prevalece el valor que el retornado otorga a la familia; se discute la veracidad de esta respuesta. Por último, el porcentaje de personas que se encontraban insertas en el mercado laboral era menor en la primera y segunda fase, mientras en la tercera fase éste se había incrementado. Se busca mediante esta investigación establecer el papel de la crisis en los lugares de destino en la decisión de retornar.
