Abstract: | The genus Staphylococcus is responsible for a large part of bacterial infections. Methicillinresistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) is one of the main triggers of diseases in hospital
and community environments worldwide. The most frequent infections are bacteremia,
infection of the upper and lower respiratory tract, skin infection, and soft tissues. MRSA
resistance to β-lactams in the world population reaches 33 %, which has forced the use of
other antibacterial agents such as vancomycin, linezolid, etc. MRSA has decreased sensitivity
to glycopeptides, which has limited treatment options, while therapeutic failures and the
mortality rate have increased. This is a descriptive cross-sectional study. The main objective
was to determine the frequency of bacterial infections caused by methicillin-resistant
Staphylococcus aureus in clinical isolates from patients at Santa Ana Clinic, Cuenca 2021-
2022. The universe and sample comprised all positive cultures between 2021 and 2022 and
their respective identification and antibacterial susceptibility tests. Data was analyzed using IBM
SPSS Statistics 25 and Microsoft Excel through simple and cross tabulation. Results showed that
out of 835 cultures studied, 9.82% were strains of S. aureus, 51.22% were MRSA, and 78.60%
were isolated in secretion samples, with higher rates in patients between 27 and 59 years old
(47.62%), in both sexes (50%), and 54.76% of cases of community origin. |
