| Abstract: | The closet, in its most basic meaning, is defined as a piece of furniture where we place
everything we decide to keep or hide, but what happens when people use it to mask their
sexual identity? In this case, "the closet" becomes a space that can be explained from
heteronormativity and is used as a mechanism of biopolitical control through which families
and society exercise power over the body and sexuality of its members, of those who subvert
the norm in sexual matters.
This research seeks to analyze the social factors that drive a person to assume or not, in the
public eye, his or her homosexual identity within what is commonly referred as "coming out of
the closet", as well as to expose the effects of the process of such coming out in the lives of
the investigated subjects and their closest relationships. To achieve these objectives, the
research work is expressed through the production of an ethnographic documentary video
made with five homosexuals from the city of Cuenca-Ecuador, who, through an ethnographic
method and a qualitative approach, expose their life experiences in relation to the so-called
"closet". The study showed that "the closet" is a very complex symbolic space, both imaginary
and real, that simultaneously represents subordination to the hetero-patriarchal system and
submission to the norm in order to live and belong in our modern societies. Therefore, the
"closet" is a space from which one never fully emerges; it is a threshold that is permanently
crossed. |
| Description: | El clóset o armario, en su acepción más básica, se define como un mueble donde se coloca
todo aquello que decidimos guardar u ocultar, pero ¿qué sucede cuando las personas lo usan
para esconder su identidad sexual? En este caso, “el clóset” se convierte en un espacio que
puede explicarse desde la heteronormatividad y que es usado como un mecanismo de control
biopolítico por medio del cual, las familias y la sociedad ejercen poder sobre el cuerpo y la
sexualidad de sus integrantes, de quienes subvierten la norma en materia sexual.
La presente investigación busca analizar los factores sociales que impulsan a una persona a
asumir o no, públicamente, su identidad homosexual, dentro de lo que se denomina
cotidianamente como “salir del closet”, así como exponer los efectos del proceso de dicha
salida en la vida de los sujetos investigados y sus relaciones más cercanas. Para lograr estos
objetivos, el trabajo de investigación se expresa a través de la producción de un video
documental de tipo etnográfico realizado con cinco personas homosexuales de la ciudad de
Cuenca-Ecuador, quienes, mediante un método etnográfico y un enfoque cualitativo, exponen
sus experiencias vitales con relación al denominado “clóset”. El estudio mostró que el “clóset”
es un espacio simbólico, imaginario y real muy complejo que representa, simultáneamente,
subordinación frente al sistema hetero-patriarcal y sumisión a la norma para poder vivir en
sociedad. Por ello, el “clóset” es un espacio del cual nunca se sale del todo, es un umbral que
se cruza permanentemente. |
